Godflesh forced to retire

2026-03-05 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 26 Comments
Pioneering industrial group Godflesh has been forced to retire ahead of the release of its final album after founder Justin Broadrick revealed the impact of an inguinal hernia meant he could no longer perform harsh vocals.

Broadrick confirmed in a statement on Instagram that continuing to perform harsh vocals with Godflesh risks further hernias, and potentially blowing out his abdominal wall entirely, so for his own health Godflesh has immediately ceased operating as a live band. However, the penultimate album, titled Decay, is currently in the mixing and mastering phase with a tentative July/August release. A final album has already been written and will be recorded in late 2026, Broadrick's health permitting. Further dub albums and live albums have not been ruled out.

Broadrick has, however, confirmed that his other less intensive projects, such as Jesu and JK FLESH, will continue alongside other newer projects which won't demand harsh vocals.

This is terrible news, hope he’s okay. So glad I got to see Godflesh live once. It was in a small hut in the woods. Absolutely incredible experience

It really is a gut punch to see this news but at least hes not completely unable to make more music in the future. Godflesh already has a legendary discography so its all the more reason for him to put his health first.

Couldn't they actually just get someone else to perform the harsh vocals that's willing to do it and Justin focus on cleans? I feel like that's really not that out of the realm of possibility unless money is an issue or he particularly prefers to perform the art himself.

What a blow, but he's gotta keep his health first and foremost. Makes me even sadder I blew off going to their gig last year because I was sure they'd come back again.

Hope he can get back to good health. Good for him for recognizing when to call it rather than push it and worsen the condition.

I genuinely thought "Forced To Retire" was the name of some new song and was entirely in denial until I read the article twice

That sucks, Justin has had a super rough past few years health wise so I'm glad he recognises when it's time to step back and give himself a rest. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Can't believe I went to what is likely to be the final Godflesh show. I'm glad he's prioritising his health, new Jesu and Godflesh is worth getting excited over.
