Pestilence to release remasters 2023-02-23 by Trey STAFF | 20 Comments | Dutch progressive/technical death metal pioneers, Pestilence, will be releasing remastered versions of their first four releases. They will appear on the various streaming services on February 24th and physically on June 30th. They will be issued through Agonia Records, who previously released the band's last album, "Exitivm" (2021).
The re-release albums have been remastered from scratch at Satanic Audio (Behemoth, Azarath) to significantly improve on overall sound quality by engaging present-day studio equipment.
The album selection was influenced by the idea to provide a looking glass into the early days of death metal (as far as Pestilence's input is concerned) and into the dawning of a legendary group, who was essential in crafting and expanding technical death metal, alongside Death, Atheist and Cynic.
A new listening experience will entail:
1. "Malleus Maleficarum" (1988) - a monument of early-day death metal heavily mixed with thrash, whose release precedes Death's "Leprosy" by a month. Debut album with Martin van Drunen (Apshyx) on vocals.
2. "Consuming Impulse" (1989) - the beginning of all things great for PESTILENCE. Introduced into Decibel Magazine’s hall of fame in 2013, the album marked a shift to heavier, more haunting and then-buzzing death metal. It also boosted PESTILENCE into international recognition and placed them at the forefront of the scene of the time with Death, Obituary, Sepultura and Morbid Angel.
3. "Testimony of the Ancients" (1991) - first album to assume Patrick Mameli's double role (guitarist/vocalist) and first to establish a trademark ingredient of PESTILENCE’s core sound formula. Recorded at the legendary Morrissound Studios (USA) and regarded as a progressive death metal classic.
4. "Spheres" (1993) - the album broke the mold at a time the metal scene wasn’t ready to appreciate its uniqueness or recognize its future impact. Underestimated at first, the bold conjunction of jazz fusion and progressive/technical death metal had eventually been lauded as a move ahead of its time, and had influenced a lot of bands, including Gorguts, Necrophaigst and Obscura.

This is a good surprise. The remasters will be streaming starting tomorrow. Might be a good time to do a review or two.
| | | As long as they don’t totally replace the originals. I tend to prefer original production, even if it’s panned
| | | pretty sure there are already some remasters floating around. I know I have one for consuming impulse.
either way, the original production on consuming might my favorite production job on any death metal album so I probably won’t like them, but I love everything from malleus to spheres so I’ll at least give them a spin and see.
| | | This reminded me that I haven't listened to Testimony of the Ancients for eons
| | | wow jam it now it’s so good
TWISTED
TRUUUUUUUTH
| | | ****MASSIVE RIFF****
| | | There’s remasters from 2007 that were low budget and unauthorized, if I remember correctly.
| | | yeah i think especially their early records would benefit from some brush-ups
| | | Apple Music is showing a Spheres release with today's date, but there's no other indication that it is remastered or anything (I haven't listened to it yet to see if there is any noticeable sound difference... have to get ready for work).
| | | 'pretty sure there are already some remasters floating around. I know I have one for consuming impulse.' (2)
will check anyway, good excuse to re-jam some Pestilence. CI remains a fave of mine.
| | | Just checked out the 2023 version of Spheres, and the difference is significant. The other ones aren't on Apple Music yet, but I am definitely interested in hearing them now.
| | | hell yeah
| | | damn these remasters are…kinda really good. the consuming impulse one basically kept the core vibe of the original sound while really opening up the soundstage. the cymbals especially sound awesome.
might just have to pick up all these reissues on CD.
| | | actual good remasters?
:O
| | | im genuinely surprised. i almost always hate remasters but these are really well done.
| | | i'd imagine malleus maleficarum sounds pretty lit then too, will probably have to pick it and consuming up
| | | Excited to hear these now. I wasn’t expecting much but the feedback ^ seems positive, so this should be good!
| | | so im listening to them on my good gear now and, at least for consuming, i still like the original more, but thats most likely because its my favorite death metal album and im biased towards the original package.
but overall i do think the remasters are pretty good. the treble is a bit too high for my tastes but the soundstage is a lot wider and feels less compressed (which feels weird to say about a modern remaster, but that morrisound style death metal production was all about compression).
| | | Excited to check these out especially after seeing some of the feedback here.
| | | I didn't have any preference for the Consuming Impulse remaster vs what was previously out there, but Malleus Maleficarum received a noticeable boost
I need to spend more time with the others, although I remember very little about the og Spheres anyway, so this is just an excuse to check again
