R.I.P. Alan White

2022-05-26 by Brendan Schroer EMERITUS | 22 Comments
Legendary rock drummer Alan White, best known for his work with Yes, has passed away at the age of 72. His cause of death has not been disclosed; however, he was absent from many of the band’s recent shows due to health issues. He is survived by his wife and two children, who issued a statement on his Facebook page. After Chris Squire’s death in 2015, White became the longest continuously serving member of the band; his final record with Yes was 2021’s The Quest.

White joined Yes in 1972 to replace Bill Bruford, and had proven to be an excellent fit for the group. His versatility ensured that he could accommodate the many influences the rest of the band were known for incorporating into their music; this included the jazz fusion stylings of Relayer, the sleek pop rock of 90125, and the orchestral majesty of Magnification, just to name a few examples. Other notable accomplishments include performing on John Lennon’s landmark release Imagine, as well as being a session musician for such legendary musicians as George Harrison and Ginger Baker.

Check out the video below to listen to one of White’s most accomplished performances, the Yes classic “Sound Chaser”:

Yeah, Relayer is awesome. Definitely one of their best... then again, it looks like Ars gave it a 2.5, lol

I remember recently seeing a video on a news piece with him about his collection of drums that were stolen and noticing he looked incredibly frail. I was very surprised that he was getting ready for another tour with Yes, but I guess his health continued to deteriorate. RIP - great drummer who played on a lot of excellent albums.

His last several tours, he was only been able to join the band every night for the last 3 songs or so. But supposedly the illness that killed him came on pretty recently.

Another great drummer of the classic prog era left us. He is responsible for some of the best pages of Yes.

RIP hard.

Replacing Bill Bruford wasn't an easy task, but Alan White proved that he was up to it. Such a shame that such a talented drummer has passed away.

RIP
