Kanye West Wins Chart Battle

2007-09-18 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 16 Comments
Kanye West's Graduation has beaten out 50 Cent's Curtis in the major albums charts in what has been dubbed the year's most anticipated rap battle.

The much talked about feud officially ended today with the not surprising announcement that West had outsold 50 by 3 to 2 in the US, selling a massive 957,000 copies compared to 50's 691,000 figure. Graduation's predecessor Late Registration sold around 860,000 copies upon its release, but the intervening two years have seen sales industry-wide collapse; 50's most recent release, 2005's The Massacre, sold 1.1 million copies its opening week.

Graduation also hit top-spot in the UK and Canada, but performed comparatively badly in the rest of Europe. Curtis pipped Graduation to the top spot in Ireland, and added #1s in Germany and the Netherlands- Kanye missed the top ten in each case- and in Australia and New Zealand, where Graduation is only released this week.

Well, that sucks. As much as I hate 50, I wanted this pretentious dickhead to lose.

they should have added a 3rd person into this so that they could both potentially get beat at the same time

This does not surprise me in the least, actually. At least it boosted album sales on both sides and caused a bunch of stupid arguments.

He got his ass kicked in Holland!

That's all that matters anyways.

Damnit, I wanted 50 to win. His album is better IMO. We'll have to see if 50 sticks to his word.

Well, I was sure that he would just pull a Jay-Z. "Yeah, I'm retiring, oh wait, yeah I'm gonna make another album though."

I hate kanye because hes so damn pretentious. I hope they both just quit music forever for the sake of music in its entirty, and he needs to stop thinking hes Christ.

Who is surprised by this? 50 has no ideas left to sustain his narrow scope of subjects he can talk about: gang violence, parties, drugs, and sex. Plus he's more abrasive to the white kids with all the money to buy albums than Kanye. I despise both of them, I just hope that Dropkick Murphys kicks the shit out of both of them this week (isn't it about time they were on a major label?).

The question is, why is a 50 cent album top in Holland?

stop using the word 'pretentious' to insult kayne. contrary to what you may think, it is relatively annoying.

fucking cockheads and your negative connotations...

Kanye West is one of the most cocky human beings on the planet for no real reason. I've pretty much hated him since he destroyed Message In A Bottle at LiveEarth. anyone else see that performance? That's how you kill a classic in 4-5 minutes.

Fuck. I was hoping he wouldn't beat Linkin Park's first week record for 07. Not because Minutes to Midnight is a great album, I just wanted to see Kanye make it a race thing. This Message Edited On 09.19.07

Hmm... I'm not really sure who I wanted to lose more. At first I wanted 50 to lose so there would be one less mainstream rapper in the world, but I realized how much him and Kanye are kind of good because they actually think about releasing a full album, instead of one song to be a good ringtone, as so many "artists" have started doing in recent times.
