Damn. I was all for lambasting any (and potentially all) the perpetrators (having known nothing about it until now) and although what he did was still wrong, his apology is either a superbly written publicity statement (being cynical), or he was genuinely misguided rather than malicious, he also appears truly sorry for his actions.

On a personal level I was looking forward to their next release having enjoyed Obsidian Arc so that's a shame, it must also be disappointing for all their other fans.

Whether I agree with it or not, the fundamental issue is that in our current societal state, it is not up to the person making the comment to decide if it is offensive or not. It seems like John fully understands the repercussions of his comment, regardless of him regretting it, hence the disbanding.

With years, I learned to know him pretty well and one thing I can tell you with 100% certainty - he is not antisemitic. He loved his visit to Israel and we talked countless times about how great it would be for him to come back, first with Agalloch and then, after break-up, with Pillorian.
About the remark he made that caused the new shitstorm, it is unfortunate that only few people will understand that all he was trying to do is to cause FB to delete his post by posting the most offensive thing possible. It was very irresponsible for him to use the words he used, but one thing you can be sure of, he didn't mean them. If you want a good analogy, think James Gunn's posts from a decade ago that cost him his career. I hate to see that his former bandmates, who know him better than I do, decided to spin it, take it out of context and basically call him a nazi. In the current PC environment, it was all too easy for them.
