Obsydians (ex-Sybreed) release tracks

2018-08-01 by KevinKC | 7 Comments
Benjamin Nominet's departure from Sybreed in 2013 was a very unexpected move, and while it put an end to the band's life, it was quite foreseeable that the others members would reform under a different name and with another singer, that which they did and didn't exactly do.

In January 2016, Drop, Ales and Kevin announced "The New Sybreed" was called Obsydians. More than two years of waiting later, eager fans of the former band can finally listen to "False Light Construct" and "Axiom Fallacy", the first two Obsydians tracks.

There's still no new singer on the horizon, as the vocals were provided by Jon Howard and Guillaume Bideau (Mnemic, Arkaea).

Both songs are pretty damn solid. Love how there's still some of that Antares sound in them.

It certainly sounds like Sybreed with different singers and that's the benchmark I'd set for them to pass. Overall, pretty decent, but doesn't quite match up to the best tracks from any of their albums. I much prefer Axiom Fallacy over False Light Constructs, though. Bideau sounds much better on industrial-tinged tracks like this over Jon Howard. Doesn't hurt that I used to be a big fan of Mnemic as well.

I could've sworn Obsydians released a couple of singles way back in late 2014/early 2015...

Oh ok, I might have made a mistake then. I can't remember ever hearing something with vocals from them but I didn't follow them under a microscope.

Naah don't take my word for it. I was living in Switzerland in 2014-2015 and thought that was when I discovered Obsydians, but I could be wrong too. It's also entirely possible that they had put out some instrumental demos at the time without vocals.

I prefer the song featuring Guillaume Bideau as I find his voice complements the overall sound better. However, I still miss Bens clean vocals (well, the screams as well). :-(

"Ascension" is as good as anything on Antares.
