At The Gates announce new album

2018-02-27 by on suicide watch | 63 Comments
Gothenburg melodic death metal veterans At The Gates have unveiled the details and artwork of their new album entitled "To Drink From The Night Itself". As with their last album, artwork is being handled by Costin Chioreanu. Vocalist and frontman Tomas Lindberg had this to say about the collaboration:

"It has once again been an absolute pleasure working creativily with Costin. We had a lot of ideas for what we wanted to get across with the art this time around. Overall they were, not surprisingly, related to the general concept of the record. What is great with Costin is that he understands the band. He knows what we are and where we come from. And me and him also have a strong artistic connection. I have never met anyone that goes so deep into the world of my lyrics and concepts. When I first wrote to him describing my ideas, I was worried that my remarks were perhaps too long and too confusing, only to get back an even longer and very inspired response…

The inspiration for the actual front cover piece is taken from the Pergamon Altar, on display at the Pergamon museum in Berlin. It is of course linked closely to the concept that the whole record is based upon, but more on that later. But I will throw a name out there, for the interested ones; Peter Weiss.

I can't wait to get the whole record in my hands now, as this is just one of the many great artwork pieces that Costin has created for us on To Drink From The Night Itself…"

The album's tracklist is as follows:

1. Der Widerstand
2. To Drink From The Night Itself
3. A Stare Bound In Stone
4. Palace Of Lepers
5. Daggers Of Black Haze
6. The Chasm
7. In Nameless Sleep
8. The Colours Of The Beast
9. A Labyrinth Of Tombs
10. Seas Of Starvation
11. In Death They Shall Burn
12. The Mirror Black

The band has alluded the album will be "thematically connected" to their 1992 classic debut "The Red In The Sky Is Ours".

I'd love for a new 3.5 ATG record. Last one felt like it was played by a band falling asleep.

As long as they don't sound like a cheap ripoff of themselves, it'll be better than AWWR.

What was so terrible about AWWR? It was overproduced and a little homogeneous in the current metal landscape but it had some decent jams. The title track in particular was heavy AF.

True, dunno why I said that first part. I think it was because I was also gonna say the album title is stupid.

oh yeah, album title is pretty bad. ATWR had a track called "Death and the Labyrinth" and a track called "Heroes and Tombs", and now the new one has a track called "A Labyrinth Of Tombs"

1) Best album cover they've had, by far
2) Album title is in their typical "metaphysical poetry" fashion, so not much to comment here.
3) Their last album (AWWR) fucking sucked and I sincerely wish they realized that. Not that they probably even care much how it was received though, because at this point they're too old and rich to care about anyone's opinion on their music than their own.
