New Mastodon LP in September?

2017-08-20 by Brett W | 62 Comments
Just a few months after their polarizing concept record, Emperor of Sand, Mastodon seem to be returning with another full length record. Guitarist Brent Hinds had been talking of having the album be a solo project, but recently artwork was posted on his Instagram page with the Mastodon logo in it.

The album, entitled Cold Dark Place, reportedly drops on September 22nd of this year.

Yeah EoS was very well received by most people. Excited to hear what this will sound like, EoS was supposed to be a double album but I guess they split them up.

Also dat artwork is bitchin'

I prefer Brent's voice over all the other guys in the band so i'm ok with this. Also cover is better than Emperor of Sand.

It seems it could be even softer and more etherealish than EoS. Love the cover though.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's one long track. Album art makes it seem like that for some reason.

I haven't "loved" an album of theirs since Crack The Skye...actually maybe The Hunter as that was the last album I really liked. I hope they can win me back with this release, but I'm gonna head into this with low expectations.

Huh, people say that Emperor of Sand wasn't that polarizing but I sure as hell am not seeing that on this thread. I thought it was a fantastic album but the bands direction has carried them long past their glory days. Actually, I don't think the band had a real masterpiece besides Leviathan.

"guys don't you think this is a little early to be adding it to the database though"

@trackbytrackreviews I don't think this will be a proper album, it may be B-sides and unreleased tracks from the Once More Round the Sun recording sessions

They had talked about a double album prior, so the possibility is undoubtedly there. However, they do not, beyond the shadow of a doubt, say this will be an LP. I cannot see a full LP being formed from a single band members bad breakup anyway, however I suppose many albums have revolved around such a theme before.

someone in a Masto thread said this was written alongside Emperor of Sand and was originally going to be a Bhinds solo record. if that user knows what hes talking about, no, this isnt going to be a b-sides album.

Whole concept of the album seems childish in comparison to Emperor of Sand. They have gone from writing about cancer to a messy breakup...

Not to crush people's hopes but I've heard this is an acoustic ep and not a full length new album. I could be wrong however, as there was also rumours emporer was meant to be a double album, so there may be music leftover from that... If that's the case I'd imagine this would be stylistically very similar to emporer.

Whether this is OMRtS and EoS b-sides or a completely new album, I expect it to be okay at best. EoS sounded very safe for Mastodon, hopefully they release something different

"They have gone from writing about cancer to a messy breakup..."

Both subjects can take an artist to inspirational dark places. The way EoS portrayed the battle against cancer was one of the strong points of the album.

Oh man, the last album was boring as hell. Their tour was boring, too.

I used to be into these guys, but after The Hunter I just can't get into them anymore. I even thought Show Yourself was at least an interesting detour, as hated as it was. I can't appreciate their meandering prog stuff - it's not technically innovative enough (just fast, emotionless tremolo fret-hopping with no satisfying melodies or progressions), and not heavy enough (no more kick your ass, knockout riffs like Blood & Thunder). Vocals lost some grit, too.

If I want to listen to prog these days, I need more emotion, rawness and/or innovation/musicality. Middling technical chugging just doesn't bring me back for repeat listens.

I'll check it out but don't expect it'll change my mind. Hope I'm wrong.
