White Offerings sounds like a harder Burials

Snow Cats is like a merge between Crash Love and Decemberunderground

I know they still get love around here, but they could have easily hung 'em up after Sing the Sorrow. I've had no interest in anything they've done since then.

I don't care what bands call their albums.

Snow Cats is fantastic. Sounds like an evolution from Sing The Sorrow with a bit of Decemberunderground in there too. The chorus reminds me of the chorus on This Celluloid Dream and the backing vocals remind me of The Missing Frame. It's definitely my favorite single since Girl's Not Grey.

Both songs feel a tad short to me. They sound like they could have been more developed. Still promising. I liked the previews but I didn't think the full songs would basically just be the equivalent of playing the previews 3 or 4 times.

The first minute and 15 seconds of White Offerings is great but then I feel like it doesn't lead into anything.
Most of the songs on this album are quite short so I really hope this isn't a problem for the rest of these songs.

White offerings is another solid song for them. I wasn't too big on snow cats but maybe it'll grow on me. I think it's fair to say afi have played everything they're capable of at this point but that's not stopping me from hoping this is their best album since sts

I agree with this, but only for "White Offerings". "Snow Cats" feels fine for the length. After that heavy bit in "White Offerings" I felt like the song doesn't go anywhere else. Unexplored potential. Still, I think it's a good return to form for the band.

Same

I still have no idea what form this album will take. The singles are so different from one another and AFI singles are never the strongest on the album (except for of course Girl's Not Grey on STS where every song is amazing)

If the bonus songs on Crash Love were considered an EP, it would definitely be a 5 for me. We've Got The Knife, Breathing Towers to Heaven, and especially 100 Words are some of their best songs. And Fainting Spells rules too

GreyShadow

And after more and more listens I think these two songs are good ideas that weren't fleshed out enough. The intro section to White Offerings is fantastic but then it kinda just beats around the bush. The verse on Snow Cats just feels so rushed once it gets to the chorus and I think they could have done something more with it.
Still, Davey sounds good and these are instrumentally tight so I'm still very excited.

They had those fans when Sing the Sorrow came out. Now, I'm one of them. I mean, I don't really bitch about any of the new stuff so much as I listen to it once and it does nothing for me.

Apparently this is actually called "The Blood Album". They called it that themselves on facebook. But it's listed as "AFI" on iTunes. I don't know if that's just an unofficial subtitle to avoid confusion or if it's literally called "AFI (The Blood Album)". But now it's definitely confusing.

Also, "old fans" that still complain about wanting the old AFI back... it's been 16 years (or more depending on what you consider "old AFI"). If you're still commenting on everything AFI related about how great they used to be, I think it's time you find a new hobby.

I don't know where it came from, but previews of the entire album leaked. I may have skimmed it... if you think "they've played everything they're capable of...", wait until you hear "Still a Stranger". They're doing a LOT of new stuff on this album. Sing The Sorrow combined with Crash Love is the closest I can describe it.

Where can I find those previews?

Also, I think they subtitled the album because there's a greatest hits album or something they released called "AFI", so they subtitled it "The Blood Album" to avoid confusion.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share links or information about leaks on here. But there's a far away "kingdom" of leaks out there.

I guess the album is officially self-titled but the band themselves have taken to calling it "The Blood Album" according to AFI News HQ.

Well the greatest hits wasn't actually approved by AFI, it was made by their old Nitro label who wanted to cash in on AFI's mid 2000 popularity but the band never wanted it realeased but couldn't block it

The title Dumb Kids makes me think that the song will have lyrics in the same vein as Pop Kids, by which I mean whining about social media and brand obsessed teens. I hope that I'm wrong though.

The self-titled record thing is so lame... Always makes me suspect the band of either lack of creativity or attempting to make a comeback. In AFI's case, mostly the first idea, since I don't think that they're trying to reinvent their sound or whatever (and even then they gave the sound a name to with it, e.g. Decemberunderground). Also, Snow Cats sounds like typical AFI song (it's good tho).

I never knew so many people put so much weight in the title of an album.

Seems a bit irrelevant to an art form that's entirely aural.

I guess you have to complain about something, huh?

FadedSun
November 2nd 2016
3196 Comments

^ Agreed. People are making a huge deal out of this. I don't really get it. I know there's some symbolism to self-titling an album according to the music world, but I doubt AFI is making a statement by doing this. It likely means nothing.

xAshtrayux

LightChaotic - chill... If the album's good, I will love it anyway. It's not a tragedy, but it does seem weird and lazy that the band decided to release a self-titled record.
I guess album covers are irrelevant in your opinion too?
While they don't affect the quality of the music, they add something to the overall aesthetic experience. Same with record titles.

LightChaotic
November 2nd 2016

I'm pretty chill.

And yeah, album covers are just as irrelevant as the title. Just seems like a vapid complaint to me. Not saying a cool title or nice cover art can't be discussed. Just pointing out how trivial I find the complaints about the album title in this thread to be.

And to your point, I think simply calling it "AFI" says quite a bit about the record and is certainly not inherently lazy.

xAshtrayux
November 2nd 2016

The only cool thing about the record being self-titled is that they're sort of screwing over their former label for releasing the self-titled compilation without the band's agreement.
