New Ging Nang Boyz single

The saga of the Ging Nang Boyz continues. The legendary Japanese punk band formed in 2003 and broke onto the scene with some insane live shows, then released two albums on the same day in 2005 before gradually fizzling out as new records and live appearances became more and more scarce over the years. Then, they abruptly returned with two more albums released simultaneously at the beginning of 2014, only for their long-standing original lineup to dissolve, member by member, over the course of about a month until only frontman/songwriter Mineta Kazunobu was left standing. Seemingly undeterred, Mineta continues to perform under the Ging Nang Boyz moniker, albeit as a solo acoustic act.

Granted, such a ridiculous band history was characteristic of the Ging Nang Boyz, who tore apart the Japanese rock world with their extreme, uninhibited, but poppy recordings and performances, decidedly adolescent lyrical style, bizarre music videos, and penchant for public nudity. The band's established outlandishness, however, did not make their sudden reinvigoration and dissolution any less surprising. So fans were left wondering: what was next for one of the world's craziest active bands, if they were indeed still active at all?

Well, it seems Mineta will keep releasing new music for the Ging Nang Boyz project, beginning with a single fittingly titled "Ikitai" ("I Want to Live"), out on April 13 through UK.PROJECT. Announced as the completion of a trilogy consisting of their previous songs "Ningen" ("Human") and "Hikari" ("Light"), "Ikitai" is expected to follow the instrumental formula of its serial predecessors as a lengthy, initially acoustic piece that transforms into a huge full-band number. Mineta will be backed on the song by session musicians Kanji Yamamoto (from The Cigavettes), Hiroshi Fujiwara and Hiroki Goto (both from Andymori and AL). In addition to the 15-minute, 11-second long A-side, the single will also contain a remix of the song "PoAdamu" from the band's 2014 album I was standing in the light.

Having maintained a fairly consistent gig schedule since 2014, Mineta will follow his run of three dates in January with appearances at the Arabaki Rock Fest in April, and Viva La Rock and the Kongari Music Festival in May. Finally, a new Ging Nang Boyz video release entitled Ai Jigoku (Love Hell) will hit the shelves on March 16 in both DVD and Blu-ray formats, containing footage from the band's appearance at the Rising Sun Rock Festival in 2008, a solo set from Mineta in Fukushima in 2015, and the final live appearance of the original Ging Nang Boyz lineup on the last date of their 2011 "Smells Like a Virgin Tour".

Well this sure isn't anything I ever expected to see on Sputnik.

Listening to GNB for the first time in about two years, I forgot how awesome many of their songs are. And their last (studio) album still sounds great.

It's understandable considering so few people outside of Japan have heard of them.

Agreed that their last album ruled, but a lot of people were disappointed with both it and BEACH.
