So Hideous stream new LP

2015-10-11 by zaruyache | 41 Comments
New York metal/post rock band So Hideous have begun streaming their new sophomore album, Laurestine, through Soundcloud.

Moving more toward post rock and classical music, and away from their black metal-tinged roots, Laurestine features a 30-piece orchestra and plays as one continuous piece of music separated into seven parts.

The album can be ordered directly through the band's website:

Cymbals sound bad. hopefully its just a bad stream. don't want to listen to it too much because of that so will wait to see if the final release is the same.

edit: yep i just compared the soundcloud stream of track 1 to the youtube stream of the same track. soundcloud is noticeably lower bitrate. i dont get why bands shoot themselves in the foot by streaming low quality online before an albums release. i downloaded a leak which was also bad so it probably was ripped from soundcloud. i noticed the same problem with the pre-release stream of caspians new album too. definitely will have to wait until release before i listen to this because its pretty unbearable in its current state.

from soundclouds help page:

"Sometimes our transcoding system can create audio artifacts, as we transcode all tracks to 128 kbps mp3 for streaming playback. We recommend uploading a lossless or high-quality lossy file to reduce these artifacts to a minimum, but unfortunately there's not much we can do"

i felt the same way. i listened to the whole thing though. never really got into their first album and i'll probably need to listen to this again to give it a proper rating. i thought it was decent on first listen.

i don't think that's really to the record's detriment considering just how gorgeous all of the sounds actually are

also the track 'the keepsake', instant goosebumps

some of these builds and whatnot just strike me as melodramatic and cheesy. i'll hold off until it's released properly though - hopefully the sound quality mixed with these soft melodic sections wins me over or something.

i like melodramatic and cheesy so [:

this sounds like one of those 'brief but striking moment' lps rather than a journey and i'm totally okay with that, can see myself walking to this a lot, especially now that it's autumn

After perusing this a bit it's seeming to me it's supposed to play as one long piece cut into a handful of sections for convenience. I can't remember for sure but aren't some of the melodies repeated across songs?

got a couple of the tracks in flac - honestly i think the production is the weakest point of this. it all sounds quite flat, you can tell it's supposed to be massive but it doesn't FEEL massive due to everything kind of blending together.

I'm really enjoying the compositions here, the music reminds me of MONO on adrenaline. I'm not really sure about the vocals, my impression so far is is they are super one dimensional and don't really complement the bombastic strings. I'm glad they are used sparsely (at least from what I've heard).

honestly this may as well have been an instrumental record but i don't think the vocals are to the album's detriment

zaruyache

the vocals are all just rooooooouh raaaaaaaaaaaauh yeeeeaaaauuuhhhhs and they never really change in intensity or tone at all. The drums are also really repetitive--they use simple double-bass rhythms whenever stuff gets "intense" and they just feel really repetitive and unadventurous for it.

I love, fucking LOVE, their last album and the vocals are fantastic. From what I've heard of the new album, the vocals aren't nearly as good as on the last album. So maybe it's OK that they're used more sparingly. I do think the production leaves a lot to be desired from what I've heard on the YouTube tracks, which are noticeably better than Soundcloud. Damn... I still have to wait a few more hours to get this in decent quality though. Anyone in Australia bought this yet and care to leak it? lol.

Heard it again. This is crazy good. I think production is more like a miles davis or classical album than a corny rock record which is sweet. Bumping my rating. Does anyone have a solid leak (2) ?

what i thought was quite cool from listening to relinquish was how it appeared that the rock instrumentation is more over to the right channel, and the orchestral instrumentation is more over to the left channel. not sure if this holds up for the rest of the album but its quite a neat separation.
