I just listened to the new album for the first time today and it is pretty damn good. Easily their most consistent and well-written. It feels like the natural progression from Irreligious with a gothic rock angle, but with better songwriting and a darker, more aggressive, atmosphere.

Moreover, I'm almost completely "illiterate" as far as the band's previous albums go (I have only listened to Irreligious) and I have to change that.

Well this is a lot better than the first song they released last month. I really like the oriental touch. But is this really better than Night Eternal? Seems to me like they did that and then completely ditched that sound.

They did ditch that sound. This is gothic rock Moonspell (but heavier than normal). That was black metal Moonspell.
