Charlie Haden dies, aged 76. 2014-07-14 by DrJohn | 14 Comments | Influential jazz bassist Charles Edward Haden, first came into prominence due to his association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Born August 6, 1937 in Shenandoah Iowa, he was an
integral part of the album The Shape of Jazz to Come that revolutionized the genre in 1959. During the 70s, Charlie Haden went on to lead the Liberation Music Orchestra
further exploring free jazz ramifications. His list of collaborations included the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Keith Jarret, Pat Metheny.
In 2012 he was inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts class of Jazz Masters. Unable to attend the ceremony due to health issues, his daughter Petra gave an acceptance
speech written by him. The following is an excerpt:
"I learned at a very young age that music teaches you about life. When you're in the midst of improvisation, there is no yesterday and no tomorrow — there is just the moment that
you are in. In that beautiful moment, you experience your true insignificance to the rest of the universe. It is then, and only then, that you can experience your true
significance".
Charles Edward Haden died in Los Angeles on July 11, 2014.
