Cowell: I'm Worth 5 Springsteens

2007-03-15 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 12 Comments
In an interview due to air on CBS' 60 Minutes this Sunday, Simon Cowell says he's worth five times as much to Sony BMG than Bruce Springsteen, who recently inked a reported 100 million-dollar deal with the label.

"I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen, sure," said forty-seven year-old Cowell of The Boss. "I mean, in the last five years, I've probably sold over 100 million records. If he got one hundred [million], I should have got five hundred [million]," he says.

While the numbers may not be exact, Cowell justifies his price-tag because he's signed "the biggest artist on the planet," referring to the American Idol franchise. "Every single 'Idol' winner is now signed through Sony BMG," says Cowell. "And this applies to ... all the countries ... we sell `Idol' to, which is over 30 countries."

"A hundred million ... that's a great deal," said Cowell. And when pressed by host Anderson Cooper as to whether he meant himself or The Boss, he added, "for him. For him it's a good deal."

Nice, we've been needing a hot new beef ever since Nas and Jay-Z stopped going at it.

Simon Cowell is a glorified A&R man who perceives and states the obvious. he certainly shouldn't be comparing himself to any artist. if for him it all comes down to dollars and cents, fine. but he is by no means worth more then Bruce Springsteen to any label. its unfortunate that a TV celebrity/taste maker like Cowell should hold such sway over what is considered pop music today or that he thinks he can take credit for the hard work and talent of those he gives a thumbs up or thumbs down to, especially to the point where he thinks he is worth more to a label then an artist like Bruce Springsteen. The record company signed Bruce of course knowing the investment may never be returned, but money is not the only reason to sign an artist like Bruce. For Simon to take anything away from any artist just because he knows how to judge a singer good or bad is just dumb. Typical bean counting suit....This Message Edited On 03.16.07

clever....and I'm worth more then most of my neighbors at what I do....which has nothing to do with what they do. Simon is comparing apples and oranges....he and Bruce do two different things.....money is not King in music. you, me, and almost anyone could be Simon Cowell. Being Bruce Springsteen would be just a tad more difficult, to say the least. Simon isn't worth more then Bruce because Simon really doesn't do crap. he's an executive and Bruce is an artist. the record company can survive without people like Cowell. he is not unique. but artist like Springsteen are few and far between. i'd put my money on those people over Cowell any day of the week. i just hope he wasn't completely serious because he sounds like an arse...This Message Edited On 03.16.07
