Ray Manzarek passes away

2013-05-20 by SgtPepper EMERITUS | 65 Comments
Ray Manzarek, one of the most talented keyboardists in the history of rock music, passed away today in Rosenheim, Germany after a long battle with bile duct cancer at the age of 74.

In reflection of this tragic loss, fellow bandmate and guitarist Robby Krieger said he was "deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate." Later adding that he was thankful for having been able play alongside Manzarek for the last decade during The Doors' reunion tours. The mourning musician then ended by saying, "Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

You can read more about Ray Manzarek and his death in this article: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ray-manzarek-doors-keyboardist-dead-at-74-20130520

Rock music certainly lost one of its most celebrated musicians today, but his memory and the legend of The Doors will always continue to live on through the music.

I thought it would be nice if we all post links of our favourite songs by The Doors or from his other musical projects in his memory.

Such a bummer, he was an amazing keyboard player and I loved The Doors. Didn't know he was suffering from cancer either so this was a terrible surprise, RIP Ray.

Riders On The Storm was the first song I remembered hearing as a child and I was completely mesmerized. I love it to this day so much for that reason because it's such an amazing song.

I have always believed Manzarek was one of the most influential musicians of his time.

I saw an interview (from memory for a comedy show) he once did about a decade ago & an impromptu challenge gave him a toy mini-keyboard that you would give a 3 year old. You should have heard what Ray was able to get out of it.

Music just lost a very talented individual.

RIP. I'm on my phone so hard to link but my favourites are The Crystal Ship, Light My Fire and The End. The organ is more dominant on that album than the guitar. I'll spin some of their stuff later.

a small tribute page at the X site. honestly this is as big a part of his musical life as the Doors were. anyone interested in Ray and his playing and music should not overlook this vital part of his career, helping usher in the new and bold as the old died out. including his own "old" band. no "punk sucks" classic rock bullshit from him. its all about the music

Yeah, their time was short lived but had such an impact on American society and music at the time.

I think he kinda aimed to have a short but very chaotic and interesting life. But yeah, still waste of talent whatever way you look at it.

Lets not make this about Jim, but he did say he was going to "get his kicks before the whole shithouse went up in flames." Man had a death wish, i'm just glad he had any musical career at all.

Regardless, Ray was the soul glue of The Doors, and he will be sorely missed. The Doors: Myths and Reality makes a fine listen on this occasion.

Favourite song: The End.

RIP Ray
