FCC May Force Indie on Radio

2007-01-13 by Jom | 18 Comments
The FCC is back in the news, this time with an internal proposal that will require all radio stations to include timeslots on their playlists for airing independently-produced and released tracks.

While no hot-button questions were answered, such as how stations are to distinguish between indie music and major-label music, the move is reportedly seen as "an option to help level the broadcast playing field."

This will cause a major paradox and will tear apart the space/time continuim

This could turn out really good or really bad.

I'm leaning towards really bad. Really, really bad.

I don't listen to the radio that much, but if it means less Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and more Set Your Goals or something, I'm all for it. If it doesn't work out, I'll just continue to ignore the radio. As long as they don't start playing the Spinto band or something, it can't get all that much worse.

Mainstream radio sucks. Anything that changes it is welcome. It's always the same tracks over and over again.

now it's gonna be the same indie tracks over and over again. telling a mainstream rock dj to check out indie is an accident waiting to happen...

Hmmmm. yeah I'd have to go ahead and say this could be really good or really bad also. But I seldom listen to the radio now, so I guess this is good news for me.

I don't know what I detest more - Nickelback and P!nk or some obscure indie rubbish.

This proposal hardly affects me at all.

I was listening to the radio today, and I loved it all. Radio is good, you just have to find it. As for the new proposal, I'm not necessarily against it, but they didn't really give a clear answer why. It can't just be to "give them a chance", or because "the people have spoken".

Where I live, there's plenty of stations that support independent music. They're there for people to find them.

This could be good. The big rock station where I live dedicates sunday nights to local bands, most of them are unsigned. I say go for it
