Levon Helm dead at 71

2012-04-20 by Athom EMERITUS | 43 Comments
Levon Helm, the iconic drummer and voice behind many of The Band's biggest hits such as "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", succumbed to his battle with cancer early this morning. Although the original lineup The Band came to an end in 1976 (it survived on in various incarnations through the 1980's and 1990's), his music career was rejuvenated in the late 2000's with his albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt securing Helm two Grammy's.

A shitty rapper gets called out by a print rag and that gets posted instantly. One of the greatest voices in rock 'n' roll dies and sputnik doesn't give a damn. You people suck.

I just heard about this. The Band has always been one of my favorites and Levon Helm lived pretty close to my area so this is very sad news.

I felt bad for Dick Clark still being dragged out there every new years after he had his stroke. It was painful to watch.

@Relinquished: I was on the job at 4AM today soooooooooooooo yeah.

Mikey Erg was a great drummer/vocalist.

But he can't touch Levon Helms.

Matt Cameron of Wellwater Conspiracy (also Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) does lead vocals/drumming on most of their songs.

RIP though this sucks.
