Progression on new Metallica

2006-12-10 by The Sludge | 36 Comments
Launch Radio Networks reports: METALLICA has written about 25 songs for its ninth studio effort and is now concentrating on trimming that list to one album's worth of material, which it will begin recording in January. Drummer Lars Ulrich told Launch on Tuesday (December 5) that the band's summer European tour, on which METALLICA played its classic 1986 album "Master of Puppets" in its entirety, paved the way for the sound of the new album. "What I hear sounds very lively, very spunky, got a lot of energy," he said. "I think that the shows we played over the summer, we were definitely leaner and kind of in better shape than we've been in a long time. I mean, having to deliver 'Master of Puppets' for three months this summer definitely revitalized some of that stuff in us, and it's been kind of fun having that in the back of our mind as we've been going through this process. I don't know what else to say."

Referring to the controversial, low-fi production on 2003's "St. Anger", Ulrich said that he's "taken the drums out of the cardboard boxes" this time, and that lead guitarist Kirk Hammett will lay down guitar solos on this record.

The new disc will be produced by Rick Rubin and is expected out by late 2007.

A video with a new song has been circulating throughout YouTube, if you would like to check out what they've been up to, and to see Mr. Hetfield slowly giving birth to a small grey animal on his chin, check out the video below.

I have a feeling this is going to be St.Anger part 2. And for anyone else that doesnt know me by now on SputnikMusic, I am the biggest hater of St.Anger ever. Worst album Ive ever heard. Rod Stewart shitting his pants sounds better than that.

Ok, the fact they fucked up their base guitar tells me they should have retired long ago (I mean, musicians make mistakes but never outright stop a song). Also, the song sucked so bad that I have lost hope for Metallica forever. The solo was aweful and reminded me that they have not even moved past The Black Album. How do you go from writing some of the best thrash metal ever to this. Metallica, please pack it in before you start writing songs like Nickleback.

I actually liked this. Pretty good vocal job by Hetfield, considering it was improvised. This album will probably sound like St. Anger, but the drums will be in tune, there'll be solos and the production probably won't suck. So, I'm predicting a solid 3.5

The recording quality is pretty good for a live recording. I don't really like the song though. Hetfield's voice sucks nowadays.

I'm banking a lot on whether this is good or not. Their one chance of redemption is at hand...

Hetfields' voice sucked on that. I liked the rest, though.
I think I'm gonna give Metallica a second chance.

I don't think anyone would expect anything great if it's improvised.
I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't improvised, though.

james's vocals are pretty much atrocious but the riff is cool

Yea, that sounded pretty dull. The riff was boring. The vocals were bad. It sounds like St. Anger No. 2, but with a solo thrown in. The solo was actually pretty good, but the rest was boring. It's so hard to take Metallica seriously these days.

You'll rate it over a 3 even if it sucks so why does it matter?

Then why do I have St. Anger pegged at 2.5, nub?

because St. Anger sucks so much.

Because you're a fanboy, which is the point I was making. Nub.

Well, I am a fanboy, but your point was null because St. Anger sucked and I didn't give it above a 3.

i think it is funny how for every album since cliff has died, lars has been saying it's gonna be their best album since master.

Kirk's technique has really gone downhill, the solo also lacked alot of melody. But the most shocking thing of all is that there was no wah wah! Hopefully by the time the actual CD is done Hetfield will have worked on his vocals, Hammet will have more time to come up with melodic solos, and the final thing wont suck.

I HOPE the new cd isn't St.Anger 2.
I HOPE! I HOPE! I HOPE!

I'm confident it won't be as bad as St. Anger, but I have a feeling it'll be a bad ReLoad.

If this cd tanks, the best thing for them would be to die in a plane crash.
That way they won't have to they'll be looked at as classic Talica. The new stuff will be ignored.
No, my point is not null because when you review this album you'll probably hail it as a return to form for Metallica and give it at least a 3. I wasn't saying anything about ratings of previous Metallica albums, I merely predicted what you will give this album.
But you proved his point by admitting that St. Anger sucked, while you still have a 2,5, or average, rating for it.

Damn, the sound stopped wrking on my computer today!
I think most of the songs on Anger were better than most on Load & Reload (cept for a few standouts like Outlaw & Fixxxer & Bleeding Me), but this band has been all but dead since Justice.

And yet still, they've fired Bob Rock! And Rick Rubin has been known to work miracles (even though Slipknot took a dive when they replaced Ross Robinson w Rubin). But still - Maybe Rubin can bring Metallica some Slayer magic.
