Bon Iver, Radiohead and James Blake all in the top 20. Glad to see the mainstream has been listening to (some) good music this year.

last fm is the mainstream?

luci

Well indie-minded listeners only make up a fraction of the community. I'm not saying lastfm is billboard top 200 but i think it's representative of what people around the world are listening to.

FromDaHood
January 12th 2012

It totally is based on number of users that listened to them. That's so not representative of "most-listened to artists."

Oh wait, maybe it is. Bottom line: I liked it more when it was based on play count.

What a shitty list. Some of the artists deserved to be on the list like Beyonce, The Foo Fighters and The Strokes but the rest of the list is like WTF

Ok, so going by plays determines if the artist is the best? Yeah, because that makes sense.

That still doesn't mean they are the best just because they get played the most. Based on that logic, that would mean Lady Gaga is great but we all know she sucks

It's dance pop; there's not much depth going on there. Her music is decent but it's not that great. She gets attention for dressing and having music videos reminiscent of Marilyn Manson and being very vocal about her pro-LQBT stance.

@theacademy: link to Adele being racist? this is new to me.

Also, not surprised at the list. Rolling In The Deep was on every goddamn station. I heard everywhere. Starbucks, B&N, etc

Not surprised with Gaga, though. Born This Way was so mediocre. Chan summed up my thought on the album perfectly in his review.

u r dumb

Also pretty dope list. I don't see why people would get riled up over it. The fact that J. Cole is the top hip-hop of the year realy made me cringe but besides that the top-listened is generally a'ight.

Dude it's last fm, they also have Skrillex tagged as breakcore. Kinda makes me glad that this site doesn't go further with its genre tags, the amount of pure fuckery that could ensue would simply be too much

Though it's not the worst list, it certainly has a lot of mainstream. Not saying that all mainstream is bad, it's just that in my opinion there is an excruciating amount of talent out there that isn't mainstream. I'm not going to descriminate against some of the artists that were in the list. I just think that this list wasn't even close to all the good music in 2011.
