I'd agree in the sense that Smile is definitely not for everyone, it's more like moments of utter brilliance with amazing pop songs in between as opposed to the tour-de-force of inspiration on Pet Sounds.

But really, Surf's Up is probably the finest pop song ever made

I'd be lying if I said I was aware of more than two songs by these guys, way before my time.
