Coheed Bassist Arrested

2011-07-10 by Yazz_Flute | 165 Comments
Coheed & Cambria bassist, Michael Todd, was arrested for armed robbery on the night of July 10th, 2011. After successfully acquiring a whopping six bottles of pain medication, Todd made his getaway in a taxicab to the Comcast Center, where his band was scheduled to open for Soundgarden.

I'm seriously disappointed. Huge Coheed fan. But honestly when I put two and two together, this makes sense. He left the band once before already for drug problems, then during this tour he had some sort of arm injury so my guess is he got on some meds, got addicted, and it drove him to this. Serious bummer, he's usually a nice guy. But at this point I hope the band keeps him out, and I hate saying that

Actually, pretty much every civilized country seems like they have a strange legal system when compared to the US since we send people to prisons here for the slightest reason and strip them of their rights to vote or pretty much ever get a job again. Other countries actually try to rehabilitate criminals, the US just uses them as legal slaves.

Yeah im sure the pharmacist at walgreens is going to have to seek therapy after reading his iphone note that said he had a bomb.

Im not defending the guy, but people dismissing him as just some dumb junkie idiot are missing the point. You just have to think, how desperate he must have been to resort to this. It wasnt even a money thing. Im sure he could afford to buy some oxys on the street, but he was in a different city playing a show and probably had no connections, freaked out, probably going through withdrawl and finally settled on this incredibly retarded idea of holding up a walgreens.

But really, it was a nonviolent crime, he didnt hurt anyone, he stole from a fucking giant corporation and industry that overprices life saving drugs, and he still tried to make it to his job by at least responsibly taking a cab. He didnt put up a fight or put anyone in danger.

I just find it very sad and frightening that so many americans have this huge revenge fetish and love hearing about criminals getting served "justice" rather than rehabilitation.

But i mean, if laughing at a sad, desperate man who made a mistake and became addicted to drugs makes you feel better about your life then go for it I guess.

(and i dont think this is a 'tragedy' i just think its a shame and indicative of whats going on in this country on a larger scale. perscription drugs, especially synthetic opioids are more addictive than heroin and are becoming much wider spread)

It is not a broad generalization at all. Americans by the majority LOVE justice. Its why shows like "Cops" and "Americas Most Wanted" have been on for 20 years. Its why we are the only western country that still practices the death penalty. And its one of the reasons we have the highest incarceration rate in the industrialized world.

OllieS

America has a high incarceration rate not because 'the people love justice' (lol), it's because of the prison-industrial complex, ie, the more people in prisons, the more profit private security companies make. That's why when private security companies started emerging, the incarceration rate went up (sharply).

I'm guilty I didn't read the article I assumed it was a gun and/or knife.

Doesnt make this any cooler that it was a "bomb."

This is just sad and I'm surprised people find this funny thats all.

And sexualsoybean you are so off base. 1. You don't know who he threatened or how. if i was a 16 yr old girl and some withdrawn druggie did that to me i'd shit a brick. 2. Doesn't matter who he stole from its stealing. 3. LOL at people wanting justice. heaven forbid. plus did you know that most criminals are recurring offenders? most rehabilitation doesnt work (see: this guy)

sexualsoybean
July 11th 2011
931 Comments

There is no rehabilitation within the prison system. Most criminals are repeat offenders because once you are in the system you have little option but a life of crime.

As far as who he threatened, I guess you either still didnt read the article, or you need to work on your reading comprehension because he robbed a pharmacy. Do you know pharmacists have to go to school for 8 years? Unless that 16 year old girl began her bachelors program at age 8 there is no way the pharmacist was that young.

As for justice, there may not be anything inherently wrong with the idea but it has been taking to another level in the US, with like I said, a revenge fetish mindset. As long as junkies are considered less than human and someone gets the chair here in the US, people are happy.

People drink alcohol, do a little blow, or smoke your weed on the weekends, and consider themselves so much better than the people who have an addiction problem, its a real shame.

I assume it'd be one of those feelings you always get shocked by no matter how much you prepare, like when you get pricked with a drawing pin?

"As for justice, there may not be anything inherently wrong with the idea but it has been taking to another level in the US, with like I said, a revenge fetish mindset. As long as junkies are considered less than human and someone gets the chair here in the US, people are happy.

People drink alcohol, do a little blow, or smoke your weed on the weekends, and consider themselves so much better than the people who have an addiction problem, its a real shame."

You are endlessly missing my point SSB. You are pontificating... not producing facts. What you are saying is an opinion or a theory. It's fucking unproven. You are more than welcome to hold those beliefs but that doesn't make them correct or true. also my initial point was that the person who initially set you off and made you start trashing "Americans" is a New Zealander... how that doesn't make you feel like a complete twat is beyond me.

new zealander: "So the whole threatening and stealing thing doesn't bother you? Can you invite me to your house in that case?"

American1: "I just find it very sad and frightening that so many americans have this huge revenge fetish"

American2: Dude the guy you are making that point to isn't American.

American1: But I'm right, I'm right, I'm right, I'm right, I'm right, I'm right!

American2: *stunned

This is horrible news. For Coheed, for Michael Todd, for everyone that is close to the band. Drugs ruin lives, simple.

That band pic perfect for this situation, everyone just staring at him at the far side of the shot.

"dammit todd you did it again"[2]

I actually hope they keep him though...he is a awesome bassist. They probably won't though...

I don't think what happened is funny, but the fact that he made his getaway to Comcast Center to perform a show immediately afterwards cracked me up
