Zakk Wylde Values Family 2006-10-26 by Jom | 14 Comments | Zakk Wylde, guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and his own band, Black Label Society, recently conducted an interview with Telegram regarding the songwriting process and his musical endeavors, but also showcases his love for his family and friends.
Some excerpts from the interview and article follow:
Regarding his influences in songwriting:
Black Label Society was never as heavy as Pantera or Damageplan or Meshuggah, even though I like what those guys do and they are friends of mine. With us, the heaviest we get is Sabbath or Zeppelin. That's why I work well with Ozzy. No matter how heavy Sabbath ever got, Ozzy always sang melodies. We're not a death metal band. I love that stuff, it's just not what I do.
According to the article, "The Bee Gees, Elton John, and The Eagles are among the sources Wylde said he tapped when writing songs that appear on their newest album, Shot to Hell [although] the devout Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath influences are most easily spotted in the tunes)."
Regarding how he begins his songwriting process:
We just get in the studio and work. The bass player and me just started this record by jamming. We needed riffs. I'd jam on the piano for awhile. Then I'd pick up an acoustic guitar. I use all the instruments I can get my hands on. That's how you get different ideas. You're not going to write Iron Man sitting behind a piano.
How he got the gig as Ozzy's guitarist, and also his love for life outside of music:
I bleed this shit. I learned from playing ball [Wylde was an athlete in high school] that you need to be passionate about what you do. Do I like my wife and kids? No, I love my wife and kids. I saw a lot of assholes at the audition. They were saying how they wanted the job as a stepping stone. But it's like putting on a Yankees uniform. You have to honor all the guys who ever put on that uniform. It's not just another uniform. What's expected of you is greatness. That lineage of Randy and Jake is not something you fuck around with.
About Dimebag and his death:
Twelve days before that crap went down, my kids got me a Randy Rhodes guitar for a present, and I called Dime to tell him about it, and we just talked. He had a beautiful soul and wouldn't hurt anybody. If anything the guy would buy you a drink. It's an insane world. It's like me and you going to a Rolling Stones concert and throwing a brick at Keith Richards. Why would we do that?
Black Label is one big family, and we roll together. If there's going to be shit, it's not us who's going to get hurt.

Zakk Wylde is probably one of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up the instrument, but hes also one of the most caring guys ever too. despite being a viking biker god of rock, hes got mad love for his family and friends. Zakk Wylde RULES!!!

JUst because that picture is goofy as fuck doesn't mean a thing. His blind patriotism (especially towards Iraq) and his "Black and white, no shades of gray" morals are good examples.
Thanks for stating the obvious about cultures though. What I am trying to get at is that he lives up to the stereotype of the "arrogant American" which so many countries around the world give Americans (justified or unjustified is not the question at hand though).

and everyone needs to stop bringing up iraq,because it wasn't only the united states but every other major country that wanted to deal with iraq. everyone set a deadline and when the time came to take action they ran like rats exposed to light.

I am not going to get into politics. But think by your responses you you help feed my argument about people like yourselves and Zakk wylde respond to criticism
I don't like the way he portrays his positions in politics and morals. Its that simple. Most of my friends are Conservatives but their candor is so much more tolerable.
