Slipknot's future in doubt

2010-09-07 by AliW1993 | 127 Comments
Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor has stated that the bands future is in doubt following the death of bassist Paul Gray in June.

Taylor said: "I'm very conflicted about whether or not I want to do anything with Slipknot, because to me, Paul was such an integral part of the band.

"I don't want to make any statements that [will make me] look like a fool in retrospect, but to me, right now, it just doesn't make sense [to carry on with the band]. Until it does, that's the way it stays for me."

Although obviously in recent years I've grown away from Slipknot, this still fucking sucks a lot. Vol. 3 will always be one of my favorite albums. I think most people here like to exaggerate their disdain for the band especially since half of them either a)still listen to the band "in secret" or b)had this band get them into heavier music.

I'd be sad too, but I know that whatever number of albums they plan on releasing they won't really conjure up the love that I have for, say, Vol. 3.

But still, the band has definitely been a huge stepping stone in the sculpting of what I listen to today.

Yea, except Paul was one of the primary song writers, along with Joey. I don't really see how they'd continue without songs being written.

Anyways, I loved Slipknot's first 3 albums, All Hope is Gone was a pretty bland offering though. As one of the first metal bands I got into, it'd be sad to see them go, but I think it would be the right decision.

this makes me worry if someone so insignificant in a band can make them not carry on that a7x truly are doomed for because the rev meant way more to the band as a person and a bandmate than this guy to slipknot.

Are you an idiot he was a)in the band since it's very, VERY beginnings 15 years ago (much longer then a7x has been a band) and he was also one of the main song-writers throughout the bands career, a much more integral part to the band whereas all the Rev did was occasionally come up with a cool drum line and create the bands biggest atrocity "A Little Piece of Heaven".

Well, All hope Is Gone was a sign of decline, and they had Paul the bass player back then. If he was really as important to the band as they make it out to be, then things aren't looking good. Besides, Stone Sour has two members of Slipknot. And they too, are getting worse and worse with each album. Not saying that there's absolutely no chance they won't make a good album, it's just highly unlikely for me

BeardedIdiot
September 8th 2010

I suppose what you are saying is true, but there is always the chance that it could be the opposite-the band could get so worked up over this loss, that the record would be nothing more than Linkin Park's Crawling laced with a bit heavier/technical riffs. Anyway, if Slipknot makes a new album, it should definetly be their last, doesn't matter if it's good or not.

I don't want to sound like an asshole but Melbourne band The Red Shore lost their vocalist and one of the bands best friends in a vehicle accident and they still managed to carry on. That was when they frist started too, they were practically kids at the time.

But in any case, I'm not really phased should they break up.

Although i'm not a massive fan of these guys these days, i still listen to their albums every so often. And still to this day i love the first album start to finish. If it wasn't for that album i may have never got into metal. But once i heard songs like wait and bleed, (sic) and most importantly scissors i discovered how much i enjoyed heavy music. That was a little over ten years ago and i havn't looked back since.

I can also understand the whole thing about them saying paul gray was an essential writer in the band as he wrote a majority of guitar riffs on their albums.

CutMan

I don't understand why people don't understand that sometimes something can feel empty if you lose a piece of it. I mean, sometimes parents get divorced after a child dies. Sure, they loved each other before the kid, but... When you lose a piece of something, sometimes it's too hard on you.

Just depends on the case, I guess.

People just have a a different way of dealing things don't they, Slipknot did the press conference and now I guess they're mourning in a bit of privacy. Avenged Sevenfold went the other way and haven't let anyone forget for a second that their drummer is dead.

And as it's been said, Paul was a founding member so maybe the rest of the band is struggling with the thought of doing anything as slipknot without him

yeah, but slipknot and a7x are completely different.

a7x were all best friends since like, 8th grade and they formed the band out of brotherhood.

slipknot found paul because he had just moved to des moines, he had never played bass before, and he wanted to like, have a better living situation. they became good friends over time.

i don't think a7x would've come out with another record if they wouldn't have just finished writing nightmare when the rev died.

Honestly speaking, I used to love Slipknot before I realized they suck. Looking back now, they have about 2 good songs (everything ends, Pulse of the Maggots). I don't get why they have to quit because their bassist died, I don't remember hearing any kind of memorable bass lines at all from slipknot. But I guess they have to keep up that "9 people, it makes a square!" or whatever their stupid schtick is...I just realized, I wonder if they were inspired to have "9" people from Abigail?...nah...

WTF? "All Hope" and "Vol 3" are not heavy. They are more Hard Rock.

IOWA was there best and only descent record IMO. Heavy as a cup of cement. Corey then went tits up and poured in every ounce of "Bother" into the Knot mixture, and then they ran out of ideas mid 2005. I love 'em don't get me wrong, but yeah. Same could be said for Billy Corgan, he pretty much destroyed the 'Pumpkins, but still carries the name to the ground and then some. RIP Paul
