Very unique, I'll give it that
|
| |
ehhhh
|
| |
I was expecting to see real life footage of real killing or torture or something along those lines. Didn't find it that violent. Probably for music.
Would of preferred to see her dancing in a tight dress for 7 mins.
Same director as Justice - Stress. Remember how much publicity that got for controvesy? Same thing here?

ginger holocaust
|
| |
I thought it was amazing. Silentpotato, I think your looking at the video too literally. To me its symbolism for American racism and greed. Like when the soldiers are going through the apartment you can notice that all the people are fat and sloppy while the ginger is very trim and his apartment is neat and tidy.
|
| |
oh shit.
|
| |
Video was meh but I actually kinda like that song.
|
| |
the song was pretty bad, and so was the video.
|
| |
I thought the music and the video was pretty awesome.
|
| |
that made my dick hard
|
| |
good stuff.
|
| |
Oh yeah and for the album's release date, its actually being released June 23rd in Japan only with a bunch of bonus tracks and shit, June 29th for the rest of us.
|
| |
What happened to the original news article for this?
|
| |
@dylantheairplane I don't think it has anything to do with racism and greed in america. I think it's about american apathy concerning the racialized violence and genocide that goes on in central america and africa...
|
| |
American apathy? lol.
|
| |
ITS ABOUT THE DOPE ALBUM!
|
| |
both song and video are sick
|
| |
except the song sucks.
|
| |
Song is great, video is controversial for the sake of...
|
| |
"ginger holocaust"
+1 since I thought the same thing.
Badass.
|
| |
These types of music videos are dumb.
|
| |
good thing i have brown hair
|
| |
Apart from the soldiers being American, I don't think it really has anything to do with America, specifically. It seems to just be about resistance/terrorist struggles in general, in all parts of the world.
right, yea. All i'm saying is that setting it in America and calling it "Born Free" was not unintentional.. It creates a very specific imagery...
|
| |
this is the worst mia song i have heard : (
any video with gingers being killed is cool by me though
|
| |
yeah whatever, never got into this type of trash. i just dont understand what's wrong with me.
|
| |
And by 'trash' you mean 'awesomeness'?
|
| |
I thought the video was interesting and entertaining enough. The song fit well for the video, but i honestly don't think I would even listen to the song just for the sake of listening.
|
| |
Song wasn't listenable, but still not good. Video is amazing, ginger holocaust? yes please.
|
| |
I don't think it's set in America

if it wasn't set in American than the video would open the doors to even more ideas. like it might be a depiction of how strong and injustice the country could become in the future and one of the possible aims of it being world domination rather than just focusing on one portion of land.
|
| |
song and vid were different then I expected... thought it would be another "Papers Planes" type song.
Video was alright, naked chick was hella ugly, and the song was mediocre at best. Can't see this even
getting played on the radio.
|
| |
i didn't hear the song over all those fatfucks getting the crap beat out of them. And that whole sex scene was just for shock value, kinda gay.
|
| |
this song rules
|
| |
any video with gingers being killed is cool by me though
As a ginger, I hope you're not serious and I hope that this doesn't represent some widely held view of the video. My hair hasn't really been an issue in my life, and I'd like for it not to start.
|
| |
man never knew sputnik was this retarded
|
| |
Derp! Derp!
|
| |
What? There are US troops in every corner of the world. As far as I know, security forces within the US don't need to identify themselves with flag patches. The kid seems to have an English accent.
the house where he gets taken from has a lakers flag hanging. whatever, tho, that's not the point. the point is that its NOT about american greed and racism lol...
|
| |
Holy crap. That was intense. Probably the most amazingly weird video I've ever seen in my life. It was good, though.
|

Bad romance was better.
|
| |
"As a ginger, I hope you're not serious and I hope that this doesn't represent some widely held view of the video. My hair hasn't really been an issue in my life, and I'd like for it not to start."
I assure you he was being completely serious.
|
| |
i think the video was a strong pro-life message...
seriously guys, it's a video. it's kind of meant to be moot
song was cool, video was alright
|
| |
"... setting it in America and calling it "Born Free" was not unintentional.. It creates a very specific imagery..."
Seriously, what does this mean?
|
| |
Seriously, what does this mean?
just that americans proffer 'freedom' talk a lot. Therefore, the image of american troops invading american homes, violating the fundamental right of americans based on (a metaphor for) race is sure to be upsetting. It all just struck me as very deliberate.
Look, i didn't film the video, i just disagreed with dylantheairplane's initial reaction... and he's not even the one giving me shit about it...
|
| |
Song and video were pretty sweet, but making fun of gingers is super cliche now. That ruined it a little for me.
|
| |
@theacademy
I am not giving you shit. I agree with your interpretation.
|
| |
"But she's not even American."
Why is that relevant?
|
| |
So, only those who have lived in the USA for several years are entitled to opine about such hang-ups?
|
| |
Perhaps I am confusing the discussion about the video's message with that of the alleged setting. Sorry about that.
|
| |
Holy shit, Romain Gavras is pretty much the man. Song rules also.
|
| |
But she's not even American. You can't presume her to have dropped all these hints about ingrained American hang-ups when she's only lived in the country a couple of years. I'll give you the lakers point, but most of the imagery seems to be intended to obscure the actual location.
first of all, her market (or intended market) is largely concerned with American audiences, as evidenced by this stupid gaga feud, but putting this aside... Everybody who enjoys popularized satire adopts similar american hang-ups - they are certainly not exclusive to citizens..
Maybe its just to me that it seems to so obviously be LA or the Western United States (just how the city is looks to the Cop Out billboards to the ford armored cars)... I don't know anything about UK geography, but are there deserts over there? Also, why use American troops? I agree there are troops stationed all over the world, but how many of them are stationed in industrialized cities? I had to actually verify on iTunes (because nobody around me could tell me) that "Born Free" is not also the title to a Bruce Springsteen song...
I just think the point of the whole thing is to show internalized turmoil and oppression. Maybe its the fact that it's release comes with the passage of the recent Arizona immigration bill... i don't know if that had anything to do with it, that was just my reading of the whole thing...
|
| |
WHAT THE FVCK!?
I find it kind of weird when Erykah Badu was walking around naked I didn't give it much thought but seeing the "gingers" killed really disturbed me.
|
| |
idk I was thinking Mexican border crossing desert/immigration sorta setting near the end, but that combined with redheads and so on, just seems like she out to pick on everyone
|
| |
my bro's a ginger and so is my best friend. i will have to show them this for the lulz.
|
| |
vid sucked
|
| |
A music video could just be a blank black screen for the whole song and it could be about American racism and greed.
Art is open to interpretation, even if it is stupid.
Unless you actually read or hear what the artist intended their piece to be about, it's up in the air, so who cares?
|
| |
@someguest: Funny you mentioned MSNBC because whenever I get on the computer I go there first and read a few articles.
|
| |
@someguest: I do have a thing for jerks. ^_~
|
| |
But if it weren't supposed to be about the USA why would they go to extra lengths to show that it was in the USA (such as the Lakers poster)? They could have made it look like some other country.
I'm not trying to argue or anything. I just don't understand the video really.
|
| |
I'm not really sure what you mean here.
that M.I.A, despite not being from the U.S.A. is cognizant of the excessive (and often disingenuous) 'freedom' talk popularized by american culture and the american media.
It is LA - that's where most videos are shot.
yea, i'm saying they did not do much to make it look like it's taking place somewhere else.
Lots.
Like where? Note, by 'stationed' i mean something substantial, and by 'industrialized' I mean city i mean G20 or close enough... Not shunning your response, I just can't picture it and don't have concrete knowledge either way...
But the actual city in the video seems more like a rundown, futuristic image of a modern city that has been rendered desolate by war and conflict.
no, it looks like downtown L.A.
but I don't think it follows that the overall concept is a critique on American society or even that the main topic of discussion is the conduct of the US military.
this is so much closer to the dylantheairplane point I disagreed with than to my own point.
I think her history suggests that the video has a lot more to do with worldwide events than anything specific to the US.
this is obviously closer to the dylantheairplane point I disagreed with than to my own point.
|
| |
tl;dr imo tbqh
|
| |
getting away from the debate / controversy around the video for a second:
in the tracklist posted here, i highly doubt the 2nd song is called "M.I.A. Born Free Master". since this tracklist is based on a picture of what looks like her own personal computer, its probably just a personalized thing. the song is called "Born Free".
also, according to that very same picture, the track times show this album to be just under 30min long. I have no problem with a kick ass 30min album, but i was hoping for a little more music... Here's to hoping it IS just a kick ass 30mins of music.
|
| |
pretty stoked for this
|
| |
I only watched the video because of promised nudity, and it was fat sex? Oh god why. But interesting concept in the end.
|
| |
^ another pointer to the US location.
god, i love mia.
|
| |
I really hate her.
|
| |
Awesome videos
Totally got off on fat penis and titties too
|

directed by eric cartman
|
| |
The video was pretty cool, no idea how they made that kid blow up. The song worked pretty well as a soudtrack but I can't see myself ever listening to it on it's own.
|
| |
hey andcas you ginger?
|
| |
Blonde hair + blue eyes ftw
|
| |
hating on someone for hair color is fucking retarded
Spoken like a true ginger.
|
| |
Is it power rangers week or something?
|
| |
this pwns lady gaga in the epic 10 minute music video contest
|
| |
"All fags must die" - Lady Gaga
|
| |
Great video
|
| |
". . .it's only a matter of time before they start picking off traits that no one can escape via. eyes, hair color, etc"
The time is now. . . you forgot skin color
|
| |
Fair enough
|
| |
I thlught it was visually interesting but the song didn't do shit for me. The song served more of a background to the video haha. I sorta am with everyone else that it was commenting on picking out an entire race on something they have no control over, similarly to the holocaust. Maybe however, the way M.I.A or the video director executed the video was a bit off. It's not clear enough and it sort of gets a bit offensive. There is a fine line between offensive and shock value.
|
| |
crap song
|
| |
woops i opened it at work.
|
| |
got fired.
