The State of Animal Collective

2010-03-23 by Prophet178 | 49 Comments
Panda Bear recently sat down for an interview with BBC Radio 6 Music to talk about his upcoming solo record Tomboy (due out in September) and the current status of Animal Collective.
In the interview, Panda noted that the band was exhausted after the extensive touring the band did in support of 2009's critically acclaimed Merriweather Post Pavilion, stating:
We’re not really road dogs.

We were really happy with the record, so we wanted to put in a little extra this time. But it took its toll in terms of us just being exhausted. So I think all of us are trying to lay low just for a second.

Panda continued:

There have been times in the past when I’ve thought we were done.
So I don’t know, this could be it. I don’t expect it to be, I should say, but you never know. There’s freedom to do things outside the band or for the band formation to change constantly

However Panda noted that he and the band have been loosely talking about writing new songs, although no dates to meet together have been set yet, stating:

We’ve already talked about it in very loose, vague terms. But no dates have been set in terms of us getting together to work on stuff.

One thing I think all of us are interested in is trying to write music in the same location because it’s been a while since we’ve done that. So hopefully that comes to pass.

And finally, Panda Bear said it would be possible that the band could do an album without him, and that the idea is not out of the question, proclaiming:

I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with it. That’s an ideal that we’ve clung to since we started playing music together, that there’s freedom to do things outside the band or for the band formation to change constantly.

If those guys wanted to do that I think that would be sweet. I don’t know if they’re talking about that or not.

Nah, people just think the album is so much better than it is, though it is kinda fun pop.

But that's interesting, I like the band's ethics.

I think this is a band that if you don't like on first listens you'll never like. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, the first time I heard Animal Collective it sounded like random noises with vocals. But now I really like them.

They're definitely over-hyped, but they aren't overrated, they really do kick ass, just not for everyone.

I'm looking forward to Tomboy more than anything. I'm convinced Panda Bear is the genius of Animal Collective. Anything Avey Tare did without Panda Bear cannot hold a candle to Person Pitch or Young Prayer.

I started with MPP and was immediately awed, but I guess it's not the same for everyone.

I started with Feels; I didn't like it, but i kept it. Then came back to it, and still didn't like it. Strawberry Jam came out, it was okay. I then went back to Feels and I loved it.

I would not be content. While the record is really good, what made it so awesome is the future it suggested for Animal Collective. Now Merriweather would've been a perfect record to end off with. A perfect pop record would really just sort of seal what would be their amazing career.
