Bob Dylan: Technology Sucks

Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, Modern Times, next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle."Even these songs probably sounded 10 times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

Haha, maybe he's just deaf?
Anyway, there was no need to post this twice. I can just change the artist next time it may happen. FYI.

he is right though. a lot is lost in the recording process...but it has always been like that. it can never sound like it does live...

really though i can't stand when someon whines like he is right now,it's annoying. music right now has so many different places it can go. he needs to find the good in it instead of being friggin negative...

i don't care if he is the best songwriter ever....a wanker is a wanker.

Unless the guy's releasing his new music on a cassette tape, I don't wanna hear shit about this. He's a hypocrite who can't sing and doesn't want to accept change, he's living in the sixties.

And I like how Chan hasn't commented yet. You can come out of your denial now, dude.

cygnus what do you mean by "everything" being manufactured shit? I meant like it sounds plastic and crappy, theres no "dirt" in the music or anything, compare listen to the stuff that got radio play in the 60s and listen to some of the awful hip hop beats of today!

I don't understand? Dirt in the music? Maybe you mean the pops and crackles of vinyl?

CD's sound fine to me. They're round like records, and that's good enough for me.

Really, that's just Bob Dylan being Bob Dylan. It's not because he's old. It's not because he's living in another time. It's just because that's how Bob is. If he had lived through older recording techniques of the 60s and 70s and was somehow miraculously 28 right now, he'd say the same thing.

I read in his biography that when they were mixing Infidels (I think it was Infidels, at least), he got really fed up with how long it was taking. He said "It took two days to mix the whole of Blonde on Blonde". I think he just feels that you should play your music and put it out there as it is. I don't think he really believes in overdubbing your music to please the public. But that's how he's always been. He's always just played his music, and if people wanted to listen, great, and if they didn't, well too bad, because he never let the public influence him.

That's what I think, anyways.

bob dylan has always been an old man. he is a folk singer. used to to sing in the fields with the migrant workers in the late fifties. he is ever rebellious. he has always talked crap. i think here he might be talking about the "live" sound of music more then anything else. for all his travels and musical experiments bob is still a purest at heart. and i have no doubt the music does sound better "in the studio" like he says then on record/CD. it always has and it always will...This Message Edited On 08.23.06

I laughed out loud at that. This is being overblown...pretty soon it's gonna turn into Lennon's Jesus Christ statement haha. It's not like he's the only artist who likes vintage sound.

I love Dylan. But he just can't do the things he used to anymore. He really should retire. People were saying his voice was bad when he was in his prime, and he's been in a steady decline, grammy for Love & Theft or not.

For shame. Love and Theft is a great album! As was Time Out Of Mind. He's in a great place with his career right now.

I love Bob Dylan. He speaks the truth people. Maybe what he says is a huge generalization, drastic, and very harsh, but don't take it as bashing your favorite recent album/song. Just look at the era as a whole, and he's completely right.
