Clairo is Sexy to Someone

2024-05-24 by artificialbox | 17 Comments
Clairo has released a new single, entitled "Sexy to Someone", accompanying the announcement of her third album, Charm. Charm is set to be released on July 12th, 2024, and will be produced by Leon Michels, who is popular for his work with artists such as Lee Fields and Norah Jones.

"Sexy to Someone" is a breezy, light hearted track that see's Clairo moving in a more upbeat and soulful direction, in contrast to the somber energy of 2021's Sling.

It's supposed to be upbeat ?
I find this song depressing as hell.

It's good, but it so depressing.

Pretty upbeat in comparison to a lot of Sling. Rhythm section is groooovin here. What do you find so depressing about it, if I may ask?

Reading the lyrics makes me think this song is really a sarcastic reaction to being sexualized by fans or people in the music industry, which is a depressing subject for sure. But the music itself is pretty light and bumpin.

I can't explain why I found the song so depressing.
It has to do with the idea that being found attractive is truly a strong incentive to do things.
Here she says "I need a reason to get out of the house." And It resonates in me as "And people who aren't found attractive can just stay at home and die, nobody will care."

I used to have an extremely beautiful blond female friend and after about ten years of friendship, I just decided to distanciate myself from her because I realized that witnessing how powerful and absurd the power of physical appearance is, made everything in my life feel meaningless and absurd.

Just an example, I have an unattractive female friend with a high level degree. She was competent and adorable but not attractive, it took her thirty interviews and more than 300 letters to find a shit job in which she was treated like shit and on the same official level as employees that were far less qualified than she was. But she's ugly so everybody knows she's not in a position of power. Nobody will care, nobody will defend her. You can be an asshole to her, she'll be the one held responsible etc...

The beauty girl didn't have to make an interview and found a job in her hometown just by chatting with people, in a hospital that didn't need her. So why did she get the job ? Because a doctor wanted to have a go at her. What happened ? She allowed him to court her in a friendly manner for two months, and then dated another guy. The doctor became mad and asked to be transferred elsewhere. You've read it right: She found a job where there was none, without interview and she was useless and a doctor left to leave room for her.

I know, I'm very far from the lyrics of the song,
but again, it's the idea of attractiveness as an incentive, as something that carries you in life and that is very unfair and unfairly distributed, and absurdly powerful in a superficial culture like ours.

Anyway.

No judgement but that seems a bit odd. Being smart is not fairly distributed and can get you far in life. Having athletic ability is not fairly distributed and can get you far in life, etc. Gotta roll with what you got.

Oh okay, that makes sense, and you probably have a better grasp on the meaning of the lyrics than I do. I think you can pack a depressing message into an upbeat song though, in fact, I love when artists do that sort of thing, it's very Beach Boys.
