R.I.P. Burke Shelley

2022-01-11 by Brendan Schroer STAFF | 18 Comments
Welsh musician Burke Shelley, known for his work with heavy metal pioneers Budgie, has passed away in his sleep at the age of 71. The cause of death has not been disclosed; however, Shelley had faced a number of health issues in his later years, including Stickler syndrome and an aortic aneurysm. He is survived by his four children, including his daughter Ela who broke the news of his passing.

Budgie remain an incredibly important part of rock and metal history, as their music has inspired several legendary acts such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Soundgarden, Megadeth, and Alice in Chains. Alongside contemporaries such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, they were instrumental in the transition from hard rock to heavy metal; as such, they are generally regarded today as one of metal's foremost pioneers. Shelley's excellent bass work and high-pitched vocals - often compared to Rush's Geddy Lee - were crucial to the Budgie sound.

Check out the video below to listen to the band's most famous song, "Breadfan".

True legend. Amazing bassist and unique singer. Hopefully one day Budgie will receive the praise they deserve and be known for more than just "the band Metallica covered"

Yeah, in hindsight, I probably should have added one of their deep cuts to the article too. Ah well, at least I can still edit it in

I was working in a music shop and got talking to this guy and he asked me what I was into and I mentioned The Doors and Stooges and he told me when I get home check out Budgie - Parents. I had it written down, found it in my wallet a few weeks later but damn! One of my all time favourite tracks. Wish I saw him again to let he know i loved it. RIP Burke Shelley!

RIP, and I'm almost embarrassed I haven’t listened a whole Budgie album.

RIP. His vocals were fantastic and gave Budgie a lot of character. Their earlier work should be considered essential listening.

They're also my budgie's favourite band. He will be sad.
