Poppy goes prog

2021-07-30 by jesper STAFF | 64 Comments
Much like Coldplay, Poppy has allegedly gone prog. Having released the title track of her forthcoming album Flux, Sumerian Records described the song as "progressive. iconic. addictive." (YouTube Comment Section, 2021). A more accurate description would be something along the lines of "less intense and direct than her most recent EP, less fun than her most recent album, still very good though, in fact more good [better] than most things she's done and also quite grungy". The full album will be unveiled September 24 and features previously released single 'Her' as well as other songs.

Watch the music video here and consider leaving a good and funny comment along the lines of 'pop prog for the TikTok crowd ugh' (if that brings you joy; not mandatory).

This progs so hard that it shatters Alan Whites renal calculi.

What a lame comment, but so is this song.

Really excited for Poppy's most recent change in direction after the craziness of I Disagree and Eat. Flux, Her and Fear of Dying have all brought such a more accessible pop-punk type route. Fear of Dying cover specifically is phenomenal.

Song's not bad, but you'd think that Sumerian of all labels would be able to correctly identify prog.

Or maybe they meant progressive in a sociopolitical sense and not musical?

I love Poppy's latest work but idk why this song is being hyped like this. it's mostly just a plodding 4-chord track with a slightly heavier bridge

So this is how guitar-driven music will be revived in the mainstream, eh? Some Metric-In-Scott-Pilgrim-Friend-Of-A-Friend pop rock?

...I can dig it.

This song didn't really hit as hard as her other recent stuff, but it's still solid. She's been on such a roll though with her last few releases, I'm super excited to see what else is on this album.

"Probably a Contortionist reference since this is a prog release on the Sumerian label."

1. The Contortionist is not signed to Sumerian
2. The Contortionist lyric is "Ebb and Flow"
