Barker becomes like Rick Allen

2006-11-26 by The Sludge | 8 Comments
Former Blink 182 star and reality show star Travis Barker has been performing concerts with only one arm on the current Plus 44 tour. Barker, who has given his best impersonation of the one armed Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen, had to switch things around after finding out weeks later that he had initially broken his arm during the band's video shoot.

Barker, who once toured with a broken leg, gave us an update on the condition of his injured limb.

"It's hard to tell. I get re-examined again in a couple of weeks. I get MRI and X-rays so I'll have a better radar on how I'm shaping up and how I'm healing. Bur for now it's been really fun. Playing with one hand I never thought would be as fulfilling as it is now. I thought this was just going to suck, and it's never going to feel comfortable, and I'm never going to be able to kind of feel like I'm playing my drums again. But it actually... God forbid if I had to go on like this, I could do it. You know? (laughs)."

He also talked about how he pulls off the amazing feat of playing with one arm.

"I think it's teaching your left hand all the responsibilities that your right used to have and then teaching your left foot all the responsibilities that your left hand used to have because I'm right handed, you know? So that was a challenge, but it was something that was overcome really quickly because I was pretty much determined to do it. There was no other option (laughs). I really, really wanted to go on this tour."

For some reason, I have major respect for Travis being able to do this.

Chad Smith did it for a while after One Hot Minute.

Yeah, because everyone knows that Trav plays the most complicated beats known to modern music.

Yeah, Chad's beats suck.

Travis' aren't much better, but to be honest, Chad has nothing on Barker.

I've had to put up with so many Chad Smith worshipers, and it's complete bull.

Chad Smith is by no stretch of the imagination one of the best drummers. I kind of half agree with chan on that one. He's not that great but he doesn't completely suck.
It's weird but I'm right handed and play like a left handed person, you know, open handed (or something) and it feels way more natural.

He definately deserves some credit for that. In most cases where the drummer is injured, they'll take certain segment of the tour off and have another drummer fill in for them.
And within the context of pop-punk, I would say that Barker has some pretty tricky beats.
