Monkeys break UK sales records 2006-01-24 by Iai EMERITUS | 16 Comments | It may well be the most inevitable news story you've heard in months (save the annoucement that, yes, Axl, of course Chinese Democracy will come out this year), but even so, it's slightly jarring in its scope - within 24 hours, the Arctic Monkeys have ALREADY achieved the fastest-selling debut rock album of all time in the UK.
60,000 copies were sold in one day, beating the previous record for entire first-week sales (set by Oasis' Definitely Maybe) by 5,000. The band's MySpace also reports that since then, the 100,000 barrier has been breached. HMV and Virgin Megastores branches across the country were forced to open early on Monday to compensate for demand.
At this rate, stores may well sell out - only 300,000 copies were printed and shipped in time for Monday, and we haven't even got to the weekend yet - sales could well hit that 300,000 mark by Sunday, also 'experts' in today's Sun are predicting a more modest 200,000.
Early sales figures also show that "When The Sun Goes Down" is likely to remain #1 in the singles charts this week.

| | | Erm, for all your information, Arctic Monkeys are a British indie band (they're from Sheffield)! They've built up success through word of mouth and their amazing debut single 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor', and people like them because of their catchy hooks and honest lyrics. Many people outside of the UK may not understand their lyrics because they are about English things (E.G. "It could all go a bit Frank Spencer" on 'You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights...").
Anyway, I'm seeing Arctic Monkeys next month with We Are Scientists here in the UK! I can't wait!!!!
Hope they make it to the US soon so you can see what the fuss is about!!!
Have fun! Riches (riches.tk)

I can't believe this is going to be released in another month in the US. :upset:
| | | yeah its a brilliant album, however they have missed off some good songs that were demos in the website
| | | I like what I've heard so far but I REALLY don't get the big deal. It's just average british indie music. I mean, it is the kind of thing I'd buy, sure, but not exceptional at all. They're nothing different than anything else.
I feel like I'm not in on the joke.
