Jay Bennett Dead at 45 2009-05-24 by Tyler EMERITUS | 26 Comments | Jay Bennett, a prolifically talented multi-instrumentalist formerly of band Wilco, died in his sleep early this Sunday morning.
News of Bennett's death comes in the wake of a lawsuit he filed three weeks ago against Jeff Tweedy, Wilco's band leader and frontman. Bennett, who was in need of a hip replacement, felt that his contract with the band was breached and that he was owed unpaid royalties. Bennett, who provided organ, guitar, harmonica, piano, accordion, drums, steel guitar, banjo, bells, keyboards and background vocals for the band from 1994 to 2002, was also a highly regarded studio musician, having worked with artists like Sheryl Crow and Allison Moorer in the past.
An autopsy on Bennett's body is set to take place in the coming days.
