Cynic Wins R&M's AOTY

2009-03-16 by Tyler EMERITUS | 36 Comments
Cynic’s Traced in Air was been chosen by the regulars of SputnikMusic’s Rock & Metal forum as 2008’s Album of the Year after defeating Protest the Hero’s Fortress in the showdown everybody could have predicted.

The competition, which was run entirely by R&M’s newest mederator Pate, started on December 3rd with a simple nomination thread. 134 albums were nominated, and they were then whittled down to 64. Those 64 albums took place in the bracketed tournament. Seeding was given based on total votes, and the tournament was presented in a head-to-head knockout format. Each of the six rounds cut the field in half. The entire competition lasted 4 months and a whooping 823 posts.

The final four consisted of Arghoslent’s Hornets of the Pogroms, Opeth’s Watershed, Protest the Hero’s Fortress and Cynic’s Traced in Air

Anyone interested can download and view the entire, completed bracket at the following link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YQUEGJ1A

Be sure to come to the forums and discuss the tournament, which many feel completed Cynic’s storybook return to prominence.

I can safely guarantee that if you were banned, that was not the reason. This Message Edited On 03.16.09

Album of the year lists are always about which album is likely to appeal to most people, or which is the one most people have heard of so I take them with a pinch of salt.

That said, Cynic "Traced in Air" is a great album and Protest the Hero's "Fortress" is also very good, although not quite as incredible as many on this site may lead you to believe.

Bon Iver is better, and that reminded me of those intolerant hillbillies from South Part

Was it R&M though? You know every forum has its own mods right? I can ask about it though.

K It has been brought up with mederators. This Message Edited On 03.16.09

Pls.
It was in R&M that I posted bon iver - for emma, forever ago but that was like 2/3 days ago.
Then today I find out I'm banned for it. I guessed it was probably because it was only between cynic & PtH at the point of posting but still ...seems kinda lame to be banned for that :-/

EDIT: Thanks

Ya exactly.

Anyway shame to see that Arghoslent didn't cruise to a deserved victory but meh, I still haven't heard 'Traced in Air' in full yet.

I'm glad Cynic won, Fortress was a good album but I don't think it deserved album of the year.

I feel like you're talking out of your ass. Rolling Stone top 10? Have you even read Rolling Stone? I mean, you've made a reputation of having no idea what you're talking about on this site, but this is kind of pushing it. Arghoslent, Opeth, Cynic, Protest the Hero all remind you of RS? What?

And Thor, the Roots were in it because they were nominated. We didn't limit it to R&M like was initially planned but those albums ended up dominating anyways. It was an open nomination.

It's a very good album, but I don't think it'll ever grow on me as the classic everyone says it is. I think Watershed is much better.

Oh, by the way, is there a way we could bring back a "recent forum post" section on the front page? I find it a bear to navigate through the forum section to something relevant, and it would be a good way to get more users on the forums.
