Emperor, while great, still helped create bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. the only BM band you listed with any sort of good influence on the black metal genre is Darkthrone, and their a victim of this image conscious plague that has destroyed black metal, much like metalcore was destroyed.

Adding to the delightful conversation here, Varg has never been a satanist due to the simple fact he has proven himself is that satanism as seen in popular conceptions hasn't existed before LaVey in the first place. Medieval satanism was nothing more than straight-thinking individuals standing against the huge influence the catholic church had over the lives of, well, everyone. "Worshipping Satan" was used like today, for controversy, and also because according to christian mythos, Satan, or the Lord Of Light, was the one most responsible for our technological advance.

After some time, the church found out how easy it was just to label everyone they didn't like "satanist". This included pagans. Nowadays, labelling oneself as a pagan doesn't generate nearly as much backclash and doesn't serve as a loud defiance against Judeo-Christianity like labelling oneself a satanist. LaVey and his silly "Church Of Satan" have helped this result. Since the whole norwegian black metal scene was very anti-christian, using the satanist label served as the quickest way to defy christianity. The only "true" satanists in that scene are few, like Euronymous (though by all accounts, he was a moron anyway) or Infernus.

Summarizing it up, the reason for the mass outbreak of "satanism" in the early norwegian black metal scene was because they were young lads looking to rebel, but not having the wisdom yet to do so properly. Varg has had plenty of time to hone and look back on his beliefs, which is why they change over time. Time heals all wounds, I guess.

I don't follow what happens in black metal, so I had no idea about him even being in jail. I used to think that he was one of those guys that were a little weird but essentially normal; when first reading this whole thing I was kinda' happy that he was being released. After getting the whole story I understand who he really is.
