The Stooges guitarist dies

2009-01-06 by Iai EMERITUS | 23 Comments
It has been announced today that guitarist Ron Asheton, famous for his tenure in punk legends The Stooges, has passed away following a heart attack at the age of 60. His body was found at his home in Michigan; doctors estimated that he had been dead since New Year's Day.

Asheton began his tenure in the band as both the guitarist and the co-songwriter, along with frontman Iggy Pop. After the influential debut The Stooges and the now-classic Fun House, he was removed from the band by Pop before being re-hired and switched to bass; he was replaced on guitar duties by James Williamson (who also took a bulk of the songwriting) for their final album before breaking up, the David Bowie-aided Raw Power. It is well-documented that Asheton was not happy with being fired, with his new role in the band, or the new moniker of 'Iggy & The Stooges'; a feeling enhanced by the rest of the band's descent into heroin addiction. Nevertheless, when the band reformed in 2003, he rejoined on guitar with Minutemen member Mike Watt taking up bass duties. In the interim he also worked with many of the alternative musicians he influenced, including Thurston Moore, Mark Arm, and J. Mascis.

Asheton is the second member of The Stooges to die, following original bassist Dave Alexander's pulmonary edema in 1975. He is survived by his brother Scott, also a member of the band.
