100 Greatest, Gayest Albums 2008-09-12 by badtaste | 30 Comments | David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" (1972) has been selected as out.com's number 1 gay album. The record edged out the Smith's self titled debut album for the top position. The Smiths also had another album in the top ten, with "The Queen Is Dead" at position 6. Madonna had the most albums in the 100 albums chosen with five.
The top ten is as follows:
1. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars
2. The Smiths - The Smiths
3. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman
4. Indigo Girls - Indigo Girls
5. Judy Garland - Judy At Carnegie Hall
6. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
7. Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
8. Madonna - The Immaculate Collection
9. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
10. Antony and The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
From out.com, explaining the creation of the list as well as the criteria necessary to be selected:
Quote:
To create our list of the 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums of All Time, we polled more than 100 actors, comedians, musicians, writers, critics, performance artists, label reps, and DJs, asking each to list the 10 albums that left the most indelible impressions on their lives. After receiving responses from Boy George, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, Candis Cayne, Perez Hilton, Nate Berkus, Jake Shears, John Cameron Mitchell, Wilson Cruz, Justin Bond, Darren Hayes, Junior Vasquez, Bruce Vilanch, Janis Ian, the Cliks, Ari Gold, Holly Johnson, and a slew of others, we tallied the results to determine our top-100 list.
You’ll notice we expanded the catalog to include not only records by queer musicians but also any records that have had relevance to those voting. While albums by Elton John, k.d. lang, George Michael, Pet Shop Boys, and Ani DiFranco appeared time and again on the lists, many celebrities included what they consider gay masterpieces by mostly straight acts like ABBA, Donna Summer, and, of course, Madonna.
So here they are: the seminal, flamboyant, trailblazing, gender-bending, campy, theatrical, audacious, unforgettable albums that changed our lives.

10. Antony and The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
Just because he's gay doesn't make it a gay album.
| | | Tracy Chapman in third? How is that album at all "gay"?

Well in that case, it's a great album by a gay artist.

| | | This list is terrible, including Sgt. Peppers because Beatles manager Brian Epstein was gay?
I can understand a lot of the music popular with lezzies like Ani Difranco, KD Lang & Sarah McLaughlin and to an extent stuff like The Smiths, Jeff Buckley & The Velvet Underground but list is pretty whack with a lot of random inclusions.
David Bowie always makes me want to touch myself. :smoke:
