Tool Joins Guitar Hero

2008-09-05 by Merkaba33 | 52 Comments
A few minutes ago I found out from the band's management that we're now cleared to announce TOOL's participation with GUITAR HERO. Here's part of the press release:
"Hugely popular alternative metal band Tool, known for their epic, intense musical arrangements and killer visual arts, will also soon be known for their contribution to the upcoming Guitar Hero® World Tour. Guitar Hero fans from all over the world will be able to rock out to "Parabola" and Grammy-award winning "Schism" from Tool's critically-acclaimed 2001 album Lateralus in addition to "Vicarious" from their 2006 Grammy-award winning album 10,000 Days. The game will also feature an all-new venue designed in collaboration with the band and highlighting the art style that has become a staple in their music videos, live shows and album artwork."

A part of me is happy that anything new from Tool is arriving. A much larger part of me is dissapointed that Tool is joining the ranks of that dreaded game. Well okay the game is fun but imagine if people actually played a REAL guitar instead of guitar hero...Oh well

Ugh... sadly.
I wish they would've picked something from Aenima.

Now a wave of prepubescent kids will become Tool's "best fans", just watch. xD

And they should have at least put some better songs up for playing...

Better songs? Parabola IS the best! And Schism and Vicarious are pretty damn good.

Really, as GHWT has drums, these songs are for the drummer more then the guitarists...

Parabola is the best? noooope. Lateralus is better on the CD, as well as a few Aenima songs.

Yes, I agree that the songs are great, and the songs are more drummer oriented, but I also agree with gasmask that at least a song from Aenima would have been great.

I never said that it doesn't happen. But come on, maybe like 5% of people at most who play the game play guitar as well.

Guitar Hero World Tour looks better than Rock Band 2 in literally every way/shape/form. Or...you can tell me how it isn't?
"maybe like 5% of people at most who play the game play guitar as well."
Yes, but it's also been reported at the number of kids both listening and playing rock and classic rock music has increased dramatically through both album and instrument sales...Guitar Center has reported. So I think that is a great thing.

Alright point taken. As long as Tool releases an album better than 10,000 days I won't mind seein em on GH.

Harmonix are way better at making the "tabs" or whatever you want to call them for the songs. GHWT is rock band with more additions so the gameplay might not even be better. And if you think the custom song thing will be up to any good, you are an idiot.

I dont really have anything against these games but when you made it through dragonforce getting 95% on expert. it might just be a good time to do other things.

"And if you think the custom song thing will be up to any good, you are an idiot."
That's just ignorant. Have you even read anything about it? It uses protools and the functions are practically endless. The fact that you can download other people's creations is groundbreaking for the genre because you know there will be people out there creating awesome songs. Sure it will be 1 out of every 1,000...but it will be easy to hear about which ones are awesome.
If you ask me, to dismiss something you clearly know nothing about is far more idiotic.
As far as the note charts are concerned, harmonix dumbs down practically every chart for the guitar parts...so no I don't think they are better. Why do they make the expert difficulty so damn easy and dumbed down...why are full barre chords 2 damn notes??? it's expert...why dumb it down harmonix?!

Maynard James Keenan wrote a few words for all the 'fans' crying sellout a few years ago...

"Well now I've got some
Advice for you, little buddy.
Before you point your finger
You should know that
I'm the man,

And if I'm the man,

Then you're the man, and
He's the man as well so you can
Point that fuckin' finger up your ass.

All you know about me is what I've sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever even heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And then you bought one."

I love when people say bands have sold out for being in Guitar hero. If tool has now sold out so has....(some of these bands have...but not because of guitar hero)
Jimi Hendrix
SRV
All That Remains
Buckethead
SHadows Fall
The Who
Megadeth
Rise Against
In Flames
Killswitch Engage
Blue Oyster Cult
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Ozzy
Mountain
Thrice
Charlie Daniels Band
Lynyrd Skynyrd
White Zombie
The Living End
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Queens of the Stone Age
Eric Johnson
Slayer
Yep...they were all in guitar hero so they must be sell outs...right? Some people are so stupid it's scary. This Message Edited On 09.05.08

I think the guy who quoted Hooker With a Penis prolly sums up the whole sellout thing best, and just how much Tool cares if you buy into that. It's a video game...and even if a bunch of new fans follow them, isn't that a good thing? People seem to like to claim bands as their own. Regardless if a bunch of "little kids" think their Tool's biggest fans, actual fans know this is far from the truth, right? That should be enough

shouldnt you want bands you like to be successful and have a large fanbase? why the fuck is it alright for you to be selfish and claim the band as yours or other people as false fans but its not alright for them to make a little money or expand their fanbase?

the ones that claim bands as their own ARE the little kids...when will those pointing "sell-out" understand that?
One could easily argue that tool sold out when they signed a major record deal, long before any of us probably even heard of them...so get over yourselves.

but still, this is an all-time low for them
goddammit, there's already enough dragonforce fans* at my school, I don't need there to be suddenly a huge mass of tool "fans".
*and by fan, i mean the only dragonforce song they can name is Through the Fire and Flames.

"PICK UP A REAL INSTRUMENT.
AP you are the ignorant one"
I, and many of my friends that play guitar hero, have been playing a real guitar for years. So tell me...what about the functions of the "thingy" are "ridiculous"? You think being able to put real notes with any effect you want into the game is ridiculous? I think if I write a song on my guitar it's pretty damn cool that I could create it in the game for other people to play...actually, I think it's pretty damn revolutionary.
And I love how you were talking about Harmonix being better, implying that it's okay to play Rock Band, but the moment someone wants to get creative and put their own songs in the game you write "PICK UP A REAL INSTRUMENT"...haha what awful logic you have. It's clear that GH World Tour will destroy Rock Band 2 in sales just like Guitar hero 3 outsold Rock Band 3:1. You will not win this debate as you clearly don't know nearly as much about these games as you think you do. But hey, keep it up and tell me what's so ridiculous about Guitar hero using protools so that people can put their own music in the game. do tell how that is "ridiculous".
Oh and in your next reply....less ignorance plz.

I understand your point, and if its true that GH inspires more ppl to pick up an instrument than im all for it. Its just that personally I would rather play a game that involves something you can't do in real life. Or at least legally That's why I don't play games like Madden either.
