Emo & Goth Illegal In Russia

2008-07-23 by MadnessUnhallowed | 76 Comments
According to an article published by Kerrang, Emo and Goth music are to be made illegal in Russia.

Everything below is taken from http://www2.kerrang.com/2008/07/emo_and_goth_to_be_made_illega.html

The Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.

Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. The newspaper subsequently reported that, among other things, the draft bill dubbed the musical movements a "dangerous teen trend" and called for emo and goth websites to be regulated and young people dressing like emos or goths to be banned from entering schools and government buildings.

The newspaper interviewed one of the bill's authors, Igor Ponkin from the Russian Interior Ministry's Public Oversight Council. Ponkin called emo a "social danger" and "a threat to national stability" and said the bill is a reaction to teen suicides such as the tragic death of British teenager Hannah Bond.

"This type of behaviour is a crucial part of emo ideology," said Ponkin. "Of course there are emo teens who just listen to their music. But our actions are not directed at them but rather at those who also hurt themselves, commit suicide and promote those acts."

The Moscow Times also interviewed psychologist Inna Cherkova who said:
"Suicide is not a symptom of emo culture. I work with other teens too, and every group has emotionally troubled kids."

However, the bill is expected to become law in Russia before the end of the year.

This is ridiculous. Instead of, you know, providing more counselling and help options, they ban a whole genre of music. Which, of course, is obvious stereotyping. This is 2008. I thought we moved past this type of stuff. Guess not. You know this would never fall through in America, or even most European countries.

Exactly. Not like they can do much about something like that, since Russia is no longer led by a dictator. And if you can be arrested, then that seems to go against human rights. This Message Edited On 07.23.08

As much as I dislike "emo" and most of the typical "goth" genres, Russia is not just in the wrong here but it is also probably banning most music altogether. I'm sorry but I listen to a lot of music which could be considered emo and goth to others. Who in the Russian government is going to have the taste and the balls to define genres which have never been stable.

Emo has only just reared its head in the middle of the new millennium and it started off as a completely different musical style. Ask for goth, what is goth?. Music from Dead Can Dance to Nine Inch Nails could be considered goth. Heck I could order a rare stake in restaurant and ask for a romantic candle lit dinner and be considered "goth". This just isn't an attack on music, it is an attack on self expression which in my opinion will ironically cause more cases of depression and suicides than with said music been allowed into circulation.

Of course we are forgetting the main issue here. People would not be reading and listening into emo and goth music in the first place if they were happy with their lives. Parents and the government can't face the fact that it is the conditions that they pass down or create which cause these social dilemmas. Hence emo is now the Jew of music, taking the blame for generations upon generations of poor management in households and parliament. Russia has strengthened my commitment in being a misanthrope.

But I agree with everything else. As much as I don't like emo music, I think banning any musical genre is a pretty facist move. Don't they have freedom of speech and expression in Russia?

Try telling this to all the journalists and people who's families "disappeared" because they said or wrote something against the regime of Putin. Putin is the dictator in Russia, he just knows damn well how to cover that under the banner of democracy...

Lulz.
But seriously, as funny as this is, it's equally retarded. In any given population there will always be certain groups that act in certain ways... legislation does not change fundamental human behavior... In this case, I mean the kids who are socialized in such a way that they find themselves wanting to listen to depressing music and possibly hurt themselves. Even if the law doesn't turn out to be a total failure they'll find some other way of "expressing themselves." You never know, this could quite possibly be the catalyst for an entirely new subculture that will sweep the world...
WHY SO SERIOUS??
