God Forbid: Metalcore = Hotdogs

2008-02-28 by Trey STAFF | 22 Comments
The latest 'Words of Wisdom' from God Forbid guitarist Dallas Coyle's new online blog thing:

When I go to the supermarket, I like to buy Nathan's or Sabrett hot dogs. Not the supermarket's brand of hot dogs. I would like to hope that I have enough money to buy the higher quality product. Hence metal to metalcore. Metalcore to me is the poor man's choice for heavy, aggressive music.

Let's bring up the 'breakdown.' Most like to say metalcore is metal and hardcore put together but it's more about the 'breakdown' that gets real metal, like God Forbid, labeled with this bullshit term. If that's the case, let's go back in time to Sepultura's 'Chaos AD' which has breakdowns galore. Is that then the first metalcore record? Everyone says of course not. I say 'fuck you' 'cause if we're metalcore, then Sepultura's 'Chaos AD' is too. For the record, 'Chaos AD' is metal as fuck.

One of the ideologies that I live by is: Everything relates to everything. Metaphors are infinite. The metal-to-metalcore debate relates to everything in art; torture porn horror versus horror, cheap tricks versus real strategy, etc. Where's the beef?

Obviously metalcore has none. I don't fault the supporters who describe us as metalcore but I do fault their support of 'journalists' to try and reinvent the wheel that wasn't broken in the first place. God Forbid isn't doing anything but trying to make good metal for true metal heads. We're not reinventing the wheel and we're not responsible for that dump in the pants genre called metalcore. Can we please move on from re-labeling music that already has a label?

torture porn isn't even a real genre of horror. He's being a hypocrite by using that term.

Anyways, lol at the last line.

Um you didn't read the article, did you? He was using it as a comparison example of the debate that he is having with his music.

I agree with him fully. I've been called out many times on this site for not labeling a band the exact sub-genre. Good music is good music!

People who label anything with a breakdown as metalcore really are idiots though. "...And Justice for All" had lots of breakdowns...it must be metalcore!!

Idiots FTW!

In all honesty I've never considered Metalcore a genre either I gotta take Dallas' side on this one. You could just as easily call All Shall Perish death metal or Unearth thrash. If I was LOOKING for it I could easily say there's a hardcore vibe given off by Metallica. Would I EVER call Metallica a hardocre band? Hell no.....Music really is too full of labels. The way I look at it it's a necessary evil to a certain extent so we don't play John Coltrane instead of Suicide Silence on our I-Pods by accident: SOME labels are necessary. I would call John Coltrane in lamest terms jazz and I'd call suicide silence in lamest terms metal. You don't need to specify that Suicide Silence is hardcore, or grind or thrash or death or black or whatever the hell else you would label it as. In a nutshell it's people taking their subjective interpretation of musical style and trying to impose it objectively on people......it's just stupid music's music.....

I mean, I get what he's trying to say but he's putting his point across like a fucking moron. For one, Sepultura sucked ass after Arise. Two, God Forbid suck.

completely agreed bro. these guys put out some good metal. and if it sounds good listen to it. it doesn't matter what genre it falls into. if you dig it then listen. don't just say oh its just some other stupid band from this genre. give em all a chance. good music, like the_wizard said, is good music.

See, the funny thing is that even the brand name hot dogs are mystery meat garbage.
So even the "real metal" is still just talentless pricks playing scales too fast and trying to emulate the sounds of dying animals.

God Forbid is mediocre at best.

The same can be said for Chaos A.D.

Just like the term "nu-metal" was back in the late 90's, the term "metalcore" was used to describe a fresh (for lack of a better term) style of music the each spawned dozens of copycat bands that took the piss out of their respective cliches. Back when metalcore got big, bands wouldn't be afraid to use that label, now nobody wants anything to do with it. Just like "nu-metal" when "metalcore" killed it. Typical.

My question is what crazy new label is gonna kill "metalcore"? nu-death? blackcore? heh...i prolly wasn't the first to think of these.

to be honest i thought metalcore was already dead.

i think if your music is good enough you can rise above the labels,so maybe the band should focus on trying not to sound as mediocre as the rest of them.

Tell you what though, saw the lead singer singing south of heaven on that talking metal show. HOLY SHIT!This Message Edited On 02.29.08

I actually thought torture porn to actual horror was a great analogy, although harsh.
