REJOICE! UB40 singer quits. 2008-01-25 by Iai EMERITUS | 15 Comments | 25th January 2008 will forever go down as a glorious day in musical history, as a day that saw the end of one of the most tragic, saddening cases of mass idiocy in human endeavor.
UB40, for those of you who don't know, are a glorified covers band who have been terrorizing pub jukeboxes, VH1 specials, and any locale where pointless and harmless 'ambient' pop music is deemed acceptable for the best part of 30 years. In that period, their one good original song - "One in Ten" - has become a distant memory as their lazy, exploitative versions of Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine", Elvis Presley's "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You", Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby", "Homely Girl" by The Chi-Lites, and Lord Creator's "Kingston Town" have made them - terrifyingly - the second most successful reggae act in history in terms of record sales. Honestly, who buys this crap?
Their singer Ali Campbell - whose solo career has been roughly as good as Gary Barlow's - today announced that he will be leaving the band, citing something to do with management or some such noise. The band said they were upset or whatever.
Now: do YOU think anybody's gonna give a shit about UB40 any more now? Not a chance. Today spells the end of 30 years of pain. Rejoice, music fans - their evil reign is finally over!

meh, I wouldn't say I hate them. Rat In The Kitchen was alright.
| | | after reading this i am happy that i have no clue who UB40 are
| | | It's ironic his former band is named after an unemployment benefit form.
| | | Huh. Well, there we go. I can't say I was ever a fan of "Red Red Wine", and never really understood why it got as much radio play as it did.
| | | Their god-awful cover of I Got You Babe too - made me sorry for Chrissie Hynde
| | | I liked UB40, idk why.
| | | i quite liked this band. we had a few tapes that used to get rotation in the car when i was a wee nipper, and UB40's "labour of love" and "labour of love 2" were among them. they were part of my musical upbringing. i like these guys for the same reason i actually quite like The Drifters, Belinda Carlisle, and Bon Jovi.
what the hell, i'll say it, Bon Jovi is awesome anyway! This Message Edited On 01.25.08
| | | iai you are the man, i thought i was the only one who hates red red wine...
| | | I liked Red Red Wine
| | | UB40 are boring anyway
| | | Who is going to sing "Red Red Wine" now???? The world is a sadder place without it...
| | | You've been bringing the funnies, Iai lately. I kinda liked UB40 too, but I can easily live without them.
| | | Signing off was a good record, the rest is some of the worst music around
| | | UB40 were bloody legends.
Don't diss just 'cause it's not your taste.
I've grown up with them and inherited some brilliant vinyl!
