Ian Hill Lays Down His Bass 2026-10-09 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 2 Comments | Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill has announced his immediate retirement at the age of 74, citing worsening arthritis and a recent tendon injury.
Hill explained that arthritis now affects both shoulders, his right hand and both knees.
During the band's September 19 concert in Brussels, he snapped a tendon in his left shoulder, leaving him unable to reach his bass neck. Uriah Heep bassist Davey Rimmer subsequently replaced him for their September 21 London show.
Although Hill has recorded his parts for Judas Priest's forthcoming album, specialists could not guarantee that he would regain sufficient strength to complete a concert. He has consequently decided to prioritize his health and spend more time with his family.
Rimmer, who also plays alongside Richie Faulkner in Elegant Weapons, will become Hill's permanent replacement. Uriah Heep confirmed that he will continue performing with them throughout 2026 and at their scheduled 2027 shows wherever commitments permit.
Hill was Judas Priest's last remaining original member and performed on every studio album. The band thanked him for his contribution and welcomed Rimmer into their lineup.

Bummer for him, but tbh when is the last time anyone noticed the bass on a Judas Priest song? "The Rage," maybe?

Dang, that's a heartbreaker. Arthritis is no joke.
