Dimmu Borgir in Rap Music?

2007-11-01 by Trey STAFF | 47 Comments
According to Bild.de, Norwegian symphonic black metallers DIMMU BORGIR are threatening to sue German rapper Bushido for allegedly using the melodies from DIMMU BORGIR's songs on his albums without permission.

Although only one track from DIMMU BORGIR is mentioned in the Bild.de article, there are in fact two songs from each artist that are at the center of this dispute. You can listen to the tracks and form your own opinion as to whether DIMMU BORGIR has a valid case. They're at the bottom of the original news article.

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=83942

Note: You don't have to listen to much of either artist's songs to tell... the first 30 seconds will work.

They totally got ripped off.... I wonder if this rapper is actually a fan of the band or if someone just brought the melodies in and didn't tell him.

mainstream rappers probably don't write their background music, so some production guy probably brought it in.

Pretty funny. It's the exact same melody from Mourning Palace, just in a different key.

The title scared me. I Actually thought they were going to make a rap album. That was silly of me. But they should sue that rapper for stealing that withouth permission.

Obvious melody stealing has occurred. You don't have to have a keen ear to pick up on this one - I'm surprised at how obvious it is.

The first track isn't actually Bushido as far as I can tell... the melody is exactly the same though.

The similarity is not so clear for the second one as far as I can tell, but it's definately the assface Bushido.

I hate this guy with a flaming passion, as he is an idiot son of an asscrack....

I think sampling should be free and legal. A lot of music copyright laws don't serve to protect anyone's "rights" but to fill the pockets of label executives. Seriously, fuck the music industry and all it stands for.

Shouldnt all rappers get sued these days for ripping off everyones music and making them into retarded samples?

I'd have to dispute that for selfish reasons... Industrial music benefited considerably back when they could freely use short samples of other audio recordings. Now that they can't, a lot of the new industrial feels like it's lacking.

as a producer, i have sampled a few melodies from metal in my hip-hop tracks. its not stealing, its flaterry. i really like metal, so ill sample melodies i think will work will in a hip-hop track. its just sad some bands cant take the compliment. i guess to some people its more about money than the music. maybe its just me but ill never understand that.

its not stealing,

Correct! BUT WITHOUT PERMISSION, it's musical plagiarism, and in a sense, that denotes stealingThis Message Edited On 11.04.07

Its fine untill you sell it as your own. Basically its like stealing parts of someone elses term paper, etc. Its not your work, therefore you should not get credit for it. How come you can
t come up with something yourself, if you can't, you don't deserve to make money.

"How come you cant come up with something yourself"

You clearly arent a huge hip-hop fan. if you knew a little bit about where it came from, the culture, and the art of sampling you wouldnt say that. But its ok if you dont get it.

btw the term paper analogy doesnt really work. sit down with someone while they produce a hip-hop track. understand the roots of sampling. its interesting and theres a little more to it. its quite an interesting culture.

"LOL
That line never gets old"

yeah if u hadnt guessed i dont know how to properly quote people on here. ahah. But yeah. id care about that remark if i wasnt such a sarcastic and cynical prick myself. lol.

i love how you can post a comment and people can just pick u apart from the stupidest things sometimes.

Yes, I'm sure you know more about that culture than EVERYONE ELSE on this site. We bow down to your never-ending track-producing wisdom.

yeah if u hadnt guessed i dont know how to properly quote people on here. ahah.

...And that is precisely why a small amount of HTML knowledge goes a very long way.

It's funny because there is a serious possibility that Dimmu's keyboardist during Stormblast actually ripped of the piano meldoy in Alt Lys... himself. Sorgens Kammer is ripped off on that album, and I'm almost certain that I read tht Alt Lys is too.
