maudlin of the Well is back

2026-02-27 by ShadowOfTheCitadel | 30 Comments
The world may be crumbling around us in hyper-speed these days, but at least we're getting some good music to score it to.

Speaking of score, humanity has gotten a big win today with some great news to some old heads of metal:
Avant-garde prog metal band maudlin of the Well is reuniting for their 30th anniversary this year.

Per founding guitarist/bassist/singer/clarinetist/pond water hand tappist Toby Driver:

"In 1996, three friends from Connecticut set out to build a private world, a place to disappear into. We approached music guided by an inner compass, following whatever paths the work revealed, rather than creating something meant for a career or a specific scene. After some time, we left that place, but it continued to unfurl in silence. It traveled quietly from person to person, connecting with those who were meant to find it and gathering energy from around the world as it went, reaching farther than we ever did. In the blink of an eye, thirty years passed. Now, as if woken from a dream, this world we once inhabited is calling us back."

The reunion is set to have a few cool things, with the possibility of some 2026 touring alongside the "ceremonial opening" of the motW archives. There's also the tiny added bonus that, *checks notes*, oh yeah - they're making a *brand new studio album*.

"...we’re preparing a new album shaped by the same internal logic that guided Bath and Leaving Your Body Map. It means returning to that mode of searching through the subconscious and the pre-inhibited emotional self, the raw and unguarded state we all inhabit before we learn to restrain it. It also means a kind of spiritual channeling, reaching back toward our own ancestral creative selves to see what still lives there."

The band has launched a Kickstarter page for this project, with the campaign set to go live in about a month. You can find all of the details and pre-follow here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/maudlinofthewell/newalbum

Until then, isn't it time you went and listened to Bath and Leaving Your Body Map again?

Chop chop.

Part the Second rules, but as usual no one has any idea what to expect. But we'll still listen!

Incredibly excited!
@Scoot- yes Moss Grew by Kayo Dot does feature just the founding three members of Maudlin and featured the doom death they were influenced by, but I assume the maudlin they’re trying to invoke on this new album is a lineup more similar to the duology. It just so happens that Kayo Dots most recent album and tour features more members of the extended lineup including Olson and Gutterman, who will likely be on the new record.
Does anyone else really miss Mia’s violins. Part the Second is goddamn magical. However the newer violinist Toby’s been working with the last couple years, Timba Harris, is class.

Fantastic news.

Bath and Leaving Your Body Map were a much needed shock for the stale metal scene in Europe and the US in the late '90s.

Edit:

I mentioned the two albums without reading the part of the news item that the new album is intended to carry on from there…

Fantastic news [2]

Ooh, this is exciting news, especially reading up on their intentions. New material along similar lines to Leaving Your Bath Water Running, even if just conceptually, should make for some interesting results.

It’s not hyperbole but it certainly hasn’t reached some of us yet (fortunately), doesn’t mean it won’t tho

cos I don’t wish it upon anyone / apologies to anyone who’s having to deal with the atrocities of war
