Van Conner dead at 55

2023-01-18 by Raul Stanciu STAFF | 8 Comments
Van Conner, former bassist of Screaming Trees, Solomon Grundy and VALIS died last night. He had suffered multiple health issues since late 2021 after an emergency stomach surgery that left him in a coma. During his recovery, COVID complications caused a blood clot to form in his lung. Van was confined to a hospital bed at home in the past year and ultimately died due to pneumonia. He was only 55 years old.

Van's death was announced by his brother Gary, who left a statement on the Screaming Trees Facebook page:
"Van Conner bassist and song writer of Screaming Trees died last night of an extended illness at 55. It was pneumonia that got him in the end. He was one of the closest friends I ever had and I loved him immensely.
I will miss him forever and ever and ever…"

Van formed Screaming Trees in 1984 together with his brother Gary Lee Conner, Mark Lanegan and Mark Pickerel. He also toured with Dinosaur Jr. in 1990 and released albums with side projects Solomon Grundy and Gardener (1999). After Screaming Trees disbanded, he worked as a session musician and formed VALIS with younger brother Patrick Conner. They released four records between 2002 and 2012.

Screaming Trees - "Bed of Roses"

Screaming Trees - "Nearly Lost You"

VALIS - "Indian Giver"

VALIS - "Head Full of Pills"

RIP

Listened a lot to VALIS, always hoped they would come back with a new album at some point.

So sad to know that half of the members from Screaming Trees are already dead. They were one of my favorite seattle bands and still very underrated til this day. RIP Van.

Give Mark a hug when you see him upthere.

RIP. Terrible news. Haven't jammed Screaming Trees in awhile but I definitely dig them. If I remember right Uncle Anesthesia was always my favorite. Will go back and probably do a full discog run in his honor
