Martin Lopez leaves Opeth!

2006-05-12 by Thor | 33 Comments
After several months away from his drumming duties in Opeth Martin Lopez has permanently decided to leave the group. After being plagued by illness and anxiety attacks Lopez decided he wanted to concentrate fully on his own project, currently unnamed. His replacement will be Martin "Axe" Axenrot who's been filling in for the last 5 tours and who also recorded with the band during the recent BBC sessions.
Mikael Åkerfeldt: " However sad I and the rest of the band feel in light of Lopez departure I want to thank him for his incredible work with Opeth and immense dedication to the band. We recorded some classic stuff together and he obviously had an enormous impact on our sound. I now feel very excited to hear the material of his own band. In the meantime Opeth fans can rest assured that we'll continue jamming it out with Axe and we all have high expectations about our coming musical ventures "

He was so embarrassed at making the top 10 in the Rock/Metal Drummers poll when others were more deserving. Way to have some respect for other drummers, Martin!

NOOOOOOOOO!!

Well that's it. Opeth will never again make another kickass album. Ever.

Excuse me while I go rip some dolls' heads off to vent my anger.

I'm extremely pissed off at this, Martin, is and was an amazing drummer, Opeth won't be the same again.

It's beginning to look like Still Life and Blackwater Park are going to be the definitive Opeth masterpieces. I doubt we'll see their like again.

This is sad. Not just because he is sick and everything, but because he has been with Opeth for so long, he was THEIR ONLY DRUMMER, as far as I'm concerned.

no, no april fools, I knew this news would pop up soon. It has been a reality that the band has known for a long time, it was just a matter of when......

But we would rather Opeth without Lopez if he doesn't want to be there (or can't be there, due to his disease...), than Opeth with Lopez when he doesn't want to be there.

Thats my attitude to music.....I don't mind when band members leave bands...because they aren't writing music for us, they write it for themselves, and regardless, I don't want members there who are half-hearted because they wish to be working with other bands...I still have full respect for Martin Lopez, and wish him well.

It was a long time coming, but it sucks now that it's a sure thing. Martin was one of my favorite modern drummers.

Is he really THAT good of a drummer?
He's definitely not bad, but I don't think his leaving of the band will affect them making killer music :/

Yes. He really is THAT good of a drummer. You don't see folks like him often.

Well, I know he's not bad, like I said.
But it just seems that there's alot of good drummers out there, and the only thing that I really thought was cool about him, is the outro of Deliverance.

But then again, I don't listen to drums much. And I'm also not a drummer.

You don't have to be a drummer to know that Martin Lopez is awesome.

The man had taste. He isn't some retard that constantly uses double bass for "br00tality" or busts out blast beats and lame shit like that.

A great drummer doesn't have to be a Flo Mournier clone or whatever.

No one tops Martin's (Lopez) effective use of ghost notes in mellow sections. NO ONE!!

I've never been big on Opeth but I can tell that they'll never sound the same.

Well, I guess I'm wrong.

I never knew that drums had such a huge effect on the way a band sounds. The only bands that really need the drummer they have now, in my opinion, are Tool, and Radiohead.

He was amazing in their DVD "Lamentations", you should check out how good he is by watching that.

Martin lopez is a legend in his own right and is for sure at the moment more respected then Martin Axenroot but Axe might see this and rise to the challenge don't judge him to early

Man, this is terrible. Martin will be missed massivly, and it will definatly show in future music. Good to hear that a good drummer took over though.
