Helin Bölek dead at 28

2020-04-06 by Mythodea | 62 Comments
Turkish musician and political activist Helin Bölek gave in after 288 days of hunger strike on 3rd of April. She was part of the quite popular music collective Grup Yorum, which was viciously hunted for their political views and lyrical content.

Helin Bölek demanded (among other things) that her co-members are freed from prison, as 4 members of the band are still incarcerated. Grup Yorum face charges for relations with the DHKP-C, a Turkish rebellious armed front, an accusation that has yet to be confirmed. Co-member Ibrahim Gökçek is still on hunger strike, counting more than 290 days.

I hadn't heard of her, but this is sad. Esp in corona times. Politics is so dirty, esp in the developing world. Egomaniacs

Solidarity with every musician in prison, but it's also worth remembering that fascists will never care about peaceful protest.

It's just a really sad loss

Turkey is a country ruled by an authoritarian islamist extremists incarcerating people over anything with zero due process so its a bit more complicated than just "rural idiots." These people are probably never getting released regardless of guilt or innocence. Not that they'd even be wrong for rebelling against fucking Turkey.

Adding more info to the conversation, authorities let loose chasing protesters coming to pay their respects during her funeral. Even in death, her presence remains important.

I have known a number of Turks over the last few years, and since they were all massive atheists I'm starting to think that Turkey has somewhat of a boomer problem.

Many of turkey’s citizens live in the countryside, and are way less educated than city dwellers on average, and these people being more religious vote in that retard erdogan, while erdogan’s support in istanbul is small compared to the national average. This thing goes for many countries, like Iran

Fighting injustice is never a stupid reason to die for. Her story will be told and inspire many other people to fight against similar injustice. Her death will have more meaning than the majority of our lives will sitting here rating thrash albums from the 80s.

@smaugman Well far-right extremism is rising in Europe and USA as well. I don't know if living away from cities or religion is the only reason Turkey suffers from a regime flirting with totalitarianism.

"What more could you expect from someone who 5s SOPHIE while in the same breath going on transphobic rants on a music site?"

It's almost as if he isn't a transphobe and never was and was having a completely different conversation but got generalized because people are really good at doing that when they disagree with someone's ooinion on something. Very strange to say the least, will require more data, by which I mean not actually assessing the thing and instead bandwagoning on the consensus of idiots.

Lmao. Riots and shit have a pretty high fail rate but killing yourself to try to spur on change is a pretty misguided way to rebel since it won't do shit and she could have done so much more by living

Nothing you can tell me to read is going to convince me that committing suicide at 28 to send a message - which ultimately will go unnoticed (outside of pussy ass websites like this with libtard hippies like you) and forgotten a week later when some other news story is at large - is a worthy pursuit and anything other than a tragic loss of life. Imagine the decades she could have spent towards actually affecting change
