New Pillows album and soundtrack 2018-07-11 by dimsim3478 | 12 Comments | Japanese alternative rock gods The Pillows have officially announced the release date for their 22nd studio album, REBROADCAST, their third album in three years. Out on September 19, the album will feature ten songs including "Boku no Tomodachi"--released as a tour-exclusive CD single last year--and "Mabushii Yami no Melody", which is set to be the theme song for the upcoming feature film Junpei, Kangaenaose. As usual, the album will be available in standard CD-only edition, and first press limited CD+DVD edition. The DVD will contain the music video for the song "Ningen Domo", as well as footage from the band's "Mono Me You Sun Tour" in the US, their first tour outside of Japan in seven years.
Frontman Sawao Yamanaka has previously discussed the possibility of REBROADCAST being The Pillows' final album. With the band about to celebrate their 30th anniversary next year, Yamanaka stated in their official fanclub magazine (rough translation):
"I have strong feelings that the next album may become the last album. That probably isn't so, but I am recording with those feelings so that I can make an album without having any regrets. Until the 30th anniversary in September next year, I will give it my all and burn myself out!"
It has also been announced that The Pillows' soundtrack for the anime series FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative will be released on September 5, two weeks before REBROADCAST. The soundtrack will be available in two formats: the one-disc FooL on CooL generation, which consists of all fourteen songs recorded by The Pillows for FLCL; and the three-disc COMPLETE CD-BOX, containing the entirety of the soundtrack, including FooL on CooL generation as well as the series' original score (composed by R・O・N from the music production company VERYGOO).
The Pillows gained notoriety outside of Japan after the anime series FLCL was aired in the US by Adult Swim in 2003; the series featured a soundtrack consisting almost entirely of songs from The Pillows' catalogue, and went on to become a cult hit. The Pillows were asked to return for the sequels FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative, and contributed new recordings of songs from their back catalogue, as well as two newly written songs which were used as the series' theme songs. FLCL Progressive finished airing in the US on Sunday July 8, and the entire series will be broadcast again on Adult Swim in the lead-up to the premiere of FLCL Alternative on September 8. In Japan, Progressive and Alternative will be screened in theaters as feature films on September 7 and 28, respectively. It will be simultaneously released on Blu-ray in Japan on the same dates as the theatrical screenings.
The Pillows are currently embarking on the "Mono Me You Sun Tour", a sold out seven-date tour of the US presented by Adult Swim to promote the new FLCL sequels. The entire tour sold out within days of its announcement, prompting extra ticket releases, upgrades to larger venues, and an extra show in order to accommodate the overwhelming demand. After the final show of the tour at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles, where the band will play to a whopping 1700-capacity room, they will make an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday July 21 before heading back to Japan.
The band is set to tour Japan in support of REBROADCAST with 27 dates that will span from November 23 through to March 17 of next year. REBROADCAST is the first release in The Pillows' THANK YOU, MY HIGHLIGHT series, the overarching title of their 30th anniversary celebration which will likely include retrospective and rarities releases, special performances, and other events (as they have done for their past anniversaries). The band is also expected to embark on the Return to Third Movement Vol. 3 tour in the near future, which will see the band performing their classic albums Smile and Thank You, My Twilight in their entirety at every show of the tour (with vinyl reissues of those albums coinciding with the tour).

The original FLCL is a classic, I’ve only seen three episodes of Progressive but it’s left me very confused. Gotta see the rest but I dunno how I feel at the moment
| | | fuck yeah, I might be on that DVD. I was right next to one of their camera guys the whole night
band still rules
| | | Flcl 2 is not a reboot. Takes place after flcl 1. Unfortunatley a lot of the team is not there that helped with the original so a lot of the magic is gone and it honestly felt rushed. Some okay characters and moments. Pillows soundtrack was the best part.
| | | I found Progressive to be pretty good on it's own. Nothing compared to the first season, but I didn't expect it to be so I just enjoyed it for what it was. Episodes 4-6 are probably the best ones imo.
| | | Those are the ones I haven’t seen yet so good to hear!
| | | i didnt know Progressive had aired already, im sort of excited, sort of apprehensive.
| | | Progressive was so-so (first half is kinda mediocre, as is the final episode, but ep. 4/5 are solid)
| | | On the music side of things, I liked the new recordings of I Think I Can and Last Dinosaur, especially considering Last Dinosaur is one of my favorite Pillows songs.

That's how I felt about the original too. I mean that's kind of the appeal right? Bright colors, zany action, vague metaphors, great tunes, and a general sense of confusion.
| | | that was expected
im looking forward to this
| | | the new verision of last dinosaur was incredible tbh
| | | woah apparently Sput emeritus Athom was doing photography at the LA show? https://www.instagram.com/p/Blded38F3Fj/
