Album is really great. Not nearly as fast or heavy as previous outings, so it won't be to some tastes, but I really prefer this to L'Enfant Sauvage.

L'Enfant Sauvage was pretty awful. Maybe this will redeem.

This is probably my second favorite Gojira record after From Mars To Sirius

I wasn't expecting something better than L'Enfant Sauvage anyways. That one's probably my favourite Gojira album that isn't From Mars To Sirius.

i mean the way of all flesh is easily their best album

the new one is a bit of a mixed bag. it's easily their shortest, and yet instead of feeling focused and refined it feels sloppy; there are a few riffs that are not only poor and boring but ruin the pacing and the atmosphere as well. otherwise the rhythm guitar takes more of a background role in building atmosphere rather than any memorable tremz ov trvth like on previous albums (see: esoteric surgery, backbone, mouth of kala, the art of dying)

drums are great, bass could have been more interesting for an allegedly experimental album (yellow stone is cool though), vocals are good, and the leads and melodies represent a natural progression for this band.

silvera, only pain and magma are the best tracks on here. stranded has grown a bit on me as well.

I don't hate it. I don't know if I like it yet though. Needs more listens..

The Way of All Flesh is probably technically their best, but I will still always love The Link and From Mars to Sirius more just because I have more intense memories with those.

I honestly didn't love the new album the first few listens at all, but it's quickly growing on me and each song is getting stuck in my head throughout my work days which is different from their last bunch of albums. I still don't know exactly where I would rank it, but the metalhead in me would still probably rank it near the lower end of their discography.

for me, i completely approve of the direction they chose to go in, i just think it's a little unrefined. there's a few djenty moments that ruin the mood imo. but i would rank this album around the same level as their first two, which i think are great, but not as good as the last three.

also is it just me or do some of the riffs on here sound like they'd fit on terra incognita?

I find it so weird that The Independent, one of the UK's biggest broadsheet newspapers, has started doing album streams lately. They premiered Hesitation Wounds' album the other week too.

Only Pain? I hope you mean Pray. Pray is easily one of the best songs they've done. Only Pain sounds identical to Stranded.

pray would be up there if it didn't end with a breakdown, into a chant, into a less interesting breakdown

Low Lands is such a great song, probably one of their best.

I'm a bit disappointed. Since they wanted to be more experimental, I hoped they would fuse those new elements with their signature sound. Instead, we get (most of the time) a mix of regular gojira songs and songs that could as well have been written by another band. I feel it really lacks some cohesion.
And I find the clean singing too boring to be used for a complete song like they do it a few times.

Still a good album, but it could have been so much better.

koloss is better than this

comparing album against album, they're pretty close, but meshuggah have been around much longer and have done much more (both in terms of releasing a lot of consistently excellent material and influencing other bands, including gojira themselves)

Nah they got too djenty, I liked it when they could thrash too. And Jens vocals aren't as potent nowadays

But Gojira have always written better riffs for me

"Nah they got too djenty"

i dont understand how you can claim this as a criticism of meshuggah, while also saying that this album is "great stuff" and that gojira are better. this album has some terrible fucking junz especially on tracks like the cell and pray, fortunately everything else kind of makes up for it.

it's also quite lacking in those "better riffs" that you speak of, sadly

like honestly i'm extremely curious how anyone can listen to that riff that starts at 0:35 in the cell and say "yeah this is better than meshuggah". or that unecessary garbage breakdown at the end of pray. on a fundamental level i just cannot understand and i wish i did, because maybe i would like this a bit more

'on a fundamental level i just cannot understand and i wish i did'

It's just an opinion man, you don't have to understand it lol
Good album though, feels more focused than their last. I'll always miss the FMTS and WOAF days but this is good for what they're going for.

The Cell and Pray are my two favorite songs. I enjoy the outro in Pray, not sure about the whole part that is muted before the breakdown...is that what you hate most? Or you actually hate that entire end?

Wish Mario would've done more with his drumming at the end of Pray though.

I could've sworn that Meshuggah was kinda like the start of djent influence so for them to be "too djenty" sounds contradictory, but I enjoy Gojira's tracks wayyy more. Their riffs are just so powerfully aggressive for me.

I can't wait to spin Magma later.

i hate that they chose to end it with a breakdown, and then another breakdown, the 2nd of which being particularly boring and bad
