My brother is obssesed with this guys smh

"The new album will be a further progression of the band's creative identity."
So worse then?
|
| |
will probably listen
|
| |
lol
|
| |
They need portnoy
|
| |
probably worth mentioning in the article that the upcoming tour they will be playing the new album in its entirety
|
| |
The horror
|
| |
shut up
|
| |
"The new album will be a further progression of the band's creative identity."
Could he be any more generic?
|
| |
Wow. This will suck even more than their last album, and I rated that 1/5.
|
| |
The last two albums were great! Breaking all Illusions, Bridges in the Sky, Outcry, Surrender to Reason, illumination Theory, and Behind the Veil are some of the best songs they ever wrote. You would have to be fucking deaf to say those albums sucked.
|
| |
the astonishing failure
|
| |
Someone needs to tell them that "astonishing" is an adjective ;]
|
| |
I'm gonna go against the grain here and believe it'll be pretty good, if not more of the same from them.
|
| |
very proggy album title
|
| |
they should ditch labrie and go full instrumental
|
| |
Labrie can still sing, just not at higher registers. He needs to do what Ray Alder did for Fates Warning and sing at a level that isn't straining his voice so much.
More instrumental songs wouldn't hurt though.
|
| |
they need to release and album that's less than an hour. last time they did that was Images and Words which is one of their best albums.
|
| |
"Breaking all Illusions, Bridges in the Sky, Outcry, Surrender to Reason, illumination Theory, and Behind the Veil are some of the best songs they ever wrote. You would have to be fucking deaf to say those albums sucked."
k fam, chill out
|
| |
Still hope, though without expecting much. I'm going to listen to it, no doubt, but that means nothing. It's just a shame that everyone, except of die hard fans, makes fun of such musicians. They are capable of so much more and have made some of the best music in metal.
|
| |
Will probably be released as "The Astonishing Dream Theater," to little surprise.
Will likely have one astonishing track surrounded by this band's brand of mediocrity :/
|
| |
Jesus, these guys are going on 13 albums and i've only listened to metropolis
|
| |
^Get on that. Images & Words, Awake, A Change Of Seasons, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and possibly Train of Thought are essential.
|
| |
I'm still really excited even though it will probably be awful
|
| |
I'm excited even though their last album is underwhelming on the level of Falling into infinity. But if thats the case, then what followed FiI? their best album, which happened to be a full blown concept album, which this next one seems to be.
|
| |
'possibly Train of Thought are essential'
Nope
|
| |
'You would have to be fucking deaf to say those albums sucked.'
Nope
|
| |
They are capable of so much more and have made some of the best music in metal.
lol
|
| |
Dream Theater made some amazing albums fuck off man
Although this is probably gonna suck like their last one
|
| |
Like two I'd call amazing, yeah. But not for 15 years at least
|
| |
You have to include at least 3 as amazing. Images and Words, Awake, and Metropolis pt 2 are all amazing. Otherwise, we get it, you dislike Dream Theater.
|
| |
Metropolis is the only thing these guys have ever done that's good and even then it's like a 3. One of the most overrated artists to ever exist.
|
| |
'You have to include at least 3 as amazing. Images and Words, Awake, and Metropolis pt 2 are all amazing. Otherwise, we get it, you dislike Dream Theater.
they were my favourite band when i was younger lol
|
| |
It makes me laugh the hyperbole on this site! Nothing is ever "good" or "ok". It's always "it sucks" or "it's amazing!!".
Sure the last album wasn't outstanding, but it was pretty damn solid and ADTOE was a great return to form, bringing back good melodies and a better balance of metal/prog.
I'm personally very intrigued about this for several reasons:
- There's much rumour (and reason to believe) that this will be a concept album
- They've taken more time making it than pretty much every other one of their albums (some even say it could be a double album)
- They've made much more of a point to address how this is something new (and I don't expect it to reinvent the wheel, but I'm hoping it delivers on this front)
|
| |
no
|
| |

oh god no
|
| |
More instrumental songs wouldn't hurt though. [2]
|
| |
As long as Mangini is still around...who gives a shit?
|
| |
I know it's become cool to hate them but I'm still looking forward it.
|
| |
It's not cool to hate them, they just suck now
|
| |
it was always a thing on sputnik to rip on DT (even knowing they actually do have some astonishing albums), people just forgot about it for a while
|
| |
double post whops
|
| |
are they still wearing affliction t shirts?
|
| |
fact: naming an album astonishing doesn't make it so.
|
| |
I get these guys can be wanky and have been pretty inconsistent for the past few albums, but damn they put out some monumental albums back in the day.
|
| |
JS19 is clearly just a Dream Theater fan boy trolling us all.
Anyway--I think its going to be a double album because Petrucci has been inspired by his nephew (Jake Bowen) in Periphery and wants to do a double album.
I'm not a huge fan of SFaM--lack of great song writing in the middle of the album hurts it and Rudess, while a sickeningly talented musician, just struggles with supplying some basic melody over rag-time piano.
That said their last two albums were a nice return to song writing, moreso the self-titled. I'll be interested to hear if they can continue with their instrumental restraint and craft a song driven concept album with lyrics that are laughably terrible (SFaM)
|
| |
dafuq, Petrucci's nephew is in Periphery?
|
| |
The worst thing DT ever did was allowing James Labrie to be there vocalist for 15 years. Cheers to another potentially great DT album butchered by bad vocals.
|
| |
Wrong, LaBrie and DT are an ideal combination.
I mean, a guy who cannot sing at all but has lots of octaves? isn't that a perfect addition to a band that cannot write songs but has lots of technical prowess?
|
| |
Well, Sinternet knows.
|
| |
The new album will be a further progression of the band's creative identity."
Deep, JP. for real, that's vague as shit.
|
| |
hate
|
| |
New Tool song confirmed?
|
| |
Keep waiting lol
|
| |
Oh Man
Will check when it comes out and then probably forget it exists after a week/5
|
| |
Porcupine Theater. Hmmmm.....with that name I doubt it.
|
| |
Wasn't convinced by the last 2 albums, but I'll definitly check this one out.
|
| |
dafuq, Petrucci's nephew is in Periphery? [2]
|
| |
Yeah the song he plays on the Periphery album is fantastic.
|
| |
Even though his solo is way too loud lol, they totally fucked up the mixing in that part
|
| |
"Porcupine Theater. Hmmmm.....with that name I doubt it."
Been around with a stupid name long enough to grow pretty hard off at least one of my namesakes.
|
| |
"The new album will be a further progression of the band's creative identity."
this is such a phoned-in, nothing statement lol
|
| |
very tru bear. But the drum wank before it is fucking sweet.
|
| |
this site is so toxic it's amazing
|
| |
Rofl the neckbeard trolls out in full force. I'd love to see them say with a straight face these guys aren't more talented than the vast majority of artists/bands out there. I mean I haven't liked the last two albums much but you can still dislike something while respecting it at the same time.
|
| |
Looking forward to this even though I don't expect it to come anywhere close to the quality stuff they once were capable of creating. But who knows, maybe they have it in them to create one last awesome record that will surprise all of us. Hope is the last to die...

Rofl the neckbeard trolls out in full force.
|

Actually, the last one to die is the one hoping, but everyone seems to forget it.
|
| |
“Dream Theater have confirmed that their forthcoming album will be a double-LP rock opera titled The Astonishing. This episodic narrative, in the tradition of earlier concept albums like 2002’s Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, turns on an effort by the Ravenskill Rebel Militia to overthrow the Great Northern Empire of the Americas in the year 2285.”
“The empire, as laid out in a pair of newly emailed releases from Dream Theater, follows “Lord Nafaryus, Emperor and Head of the Realm [and] Heir to the Mantle of Makers,” who sternly warns the populace that giving into the rebels will lead to a “destabilization of our most hallowed traditions.” Ravenskill, meanwhile, is led by “Arhys, Son of Marhys, one of three remaining heirs to the displaced, forgotten, and forbidden Legion of Sorrowful Song.” He’s asking his followers to “dream of finding power beyond powerlessness.”
….
|
| |
theyve been reading too much george rr martin
|
| |
I bet there's a song called "Displaced, Forgotten, and Forbidden."
Sounds uber theatrical.
|
| |
lol :-)

http://www.metalsucks.net/2015/11/03/dream-theaters-new-album-will-be-a-rock-opera-called-the-astonishing-more-details-revealed/
I have no words.
|
| |
Arhys, son of Marhys....
Inspired.
|
| |
"From the perch of protective power of New Maineland, which freed you from the terror and tyranny of surrounding barbarism so many generations ago..."
Oh fuck it, this sounds so cheesy and cinematic that I'll just deal and jump right in when it's released.
"Ravenskill is energized by talk of a Chosen One, possessed of a forbidden sound, a stirring melody almost impossible to comprehend."
Okay, this sounds like 2112 meets Andromeda Unchained.
|

Hot damn hahaha that page is full of gold
|
| |
could be fun, then again I'm kind of a sucker for cheesy concepts like this, as long as it works that is.
|
| |
This is going to be the greatest concept album release since Rhapsody's "Symphony of the Enchanted Lands" ...only with worse lyrics.
|
| |

to be honest, this sounds like it could be fun. I believe it's going to be cheesy, but I'm going to love it if it's grandiose and it's done well. I have hopes and I don't care if they are shattered, as I didn't expect much anyway.
|
| |
Hoo boy, this is going to be bad.
|
| |
Their last two albums are my favorite ones since Six Degrees, so i'm excited for this.
|
| |
concept albums never interest me, I don't really care about empires in far away lands and unwilling heroes.
But it seems they are going all out with this one so here's hoping they finally get it right. Let Mangini and Myung do their thing and stop the JP dad rock overload.

Haha! It's like a screenshot from that StarCraft game from back in the day!
|
| |
Dystopian Overture
yeah
|
| |
>http://www.dreamtheater.net/theastonishing#char5_LB
Looks like a low budget video game website tbh
|
| |
Looks like a civ game from the early 20's
|
| |
ew so DT are doing sci fi concept alb prog now
|
| |
always pushing the boundaries
|
| |
Of cheese
|
| |
Wow, it's Emperor Mengsk!
|
| |
This all looks awful... The concept looks awful but I hope atleast the music will be good
|
| |
This won't be a Metropolis pt 2, but it's a good sign they're having fun again. The music in the past two has been a return to form, it was just lacking a bit of fun.
I hope they don't take this too seriously, though. Recipe for disaster.
|
| |
Just saw the cover art. This looks like something Scar Symmetry would make good, but not Dream Theater. I wonder how bad they'll fuck up the lyrics and vocals this time around
|
| |
I feel like I'm the only one who is optimistic about this
|
| |
good
|
| |
^Naw I'm optimistic about this as well, actually. Keeping a very open mind and ears for this.
The cover art has connections to Octavarium's cover, it seems.
|
| |
this album is gonna be soooo not astonishing
|
| |
I thought that they were taking a hiatus.
|
| |
I want to be optimistic too. I think of all these futuristic things they might try, the ominous and haunting symphonies, the electronics to better portray the setting
and then I imagine LaBrie starting to sing
|
| |
"I thought that they were taking a hiatus."
no they werent, thats why portnoy left
|
| |
34 songs in total, and I bet over half of them are some form of interludes
|
| |
"and then I imagine LaBrie starting to sing"
lol
|
| |
"34 songs in total"
yikes, this album seems like it will be a trainwreck
|
| |
I don't know about that, the new Titus Andronicus album had a bunch of songs on that and it ended up fine.
|
| |
http://prog.teamrock.com/news/2015-12-02/dream-theater-unveil-astonishing-album-art-tracklist
|
| |
hmmmm
|
| |
Yeah but toondude Titus Andronicus haven't sucked for like 5 years unlike DT
|
| |
also we all know all these songs are gonna be like 15 minutes long so this album will go for years
|
| |
I'd prefer that to 34 3-minute DT tracks
|
| |
if all of the songs are fifteen minutes how would they be able to fit 20 songs in one disc?
|
| |
i'll bet ya none of em go for even 8
|
| |
I'm sure there's some 10-20 minute song stuck somewhere
|
| |
that being said, I think it would be really nice for them to do an album that's less than an hour. The last time they did that was Images and Words and that's one of their best releases.
|
| |
I was being facetious obviously
|
| |
and with 34 tracks I sincerely doubt this is their attempt to shoot for under an hour lmao
|
| |
no shit
|
| |
damn you really are easy to wind up aren't you
|
| |

ugh
|
| |
LOL first thing i thought too
|
| |
seriously cant believe dream theater THE dream theater that made images and words is now making a hunger games/maze runner/divergent album like seriously guys mike portnoy is a straight up cock head but even he would be ashamed of making something like this
|
| |
>Whispers In The Wind
oh fuck please no thats my favorite FW song
|
| |
Guys, this may not be their best (obvs) release, it might add nothing new and most probably it would be just mediocre, but for the most part I beleve it's going to be enjoyable. So, I'm optimistic, because, even though I didn't like their self-titled, I jammed it with pleasure, because it was sth familiar and it had fun songs.
|
| |
So Petrucci definitely handled all the lyrics
|
| |
they're trying to be ayreon, but without all the sweet guest vocalists. just labrie lmao
|
| |
I'm skeptical but surprisingly still intrigued. And maybe they do have guest vocalists. Would definitely shake things up a bit.
|
| |
man haven't thought about Ayreon in a hot minute
THEN YOU HEAR HIS VOIIIIIIIIIIIICE
CCOOOOOOOOOOOOLD AND MERCILEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS
|
| |
LaBrie "GUYS, REMEMBER THAT TIME I WAS IN AYREON?? I WAS IN AYREON, REMEMBER, GUYS? GUYS? LET'S DO THAT!"
|
| |
I'm really curious as to how this turns out tbh. At least they put some effort in it and still seem to have fun in what they're doing.
|
| |
lol i'm pumped
|
| |
this is like a coheed and cambria album except everyones 50
|
| |
even coheed stopped doing coheed
|
| |
you all will be hungry for some crow.......book it
|
| |
