40 Years Of Sgt. Pepper

2007-06-04 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 13 Comments
If you've happened to have a television on at any point in the past couple of days, you've probably heard some bright-eyed reporter-or-other extoll the phrase "in fact, it was forty years ago today" as if it were original or witty.

I am, of course, talking about The Beatles' landmark pop album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band which, along with Pet Sounds and a couple more Beatles albums, essentially established the long-playing album as the dominant form by which music is made and sold.

A decade into the Napster-era, that legacy may be fading, but the record still regularly tops critical polls worldwide, most notably Rolling Stone's 2003 list The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

On June 2, BBC Radio 2 broadcast an all-star tribute to Sgt. Pepper, with the album's original engineer Geoff Emerick recording the likes of Oasis, The Killers, Razorlight and the Magic Numbers re-interpreting the album's thirteen tracks using the same equipment used by The Beatles.

Probably my favorite band right now.
I've heard nothing about this on TV though.

Haven't seen anything about this on the Beeb or anywhere else for that matter.
MAgic Number could be...interesting.

The Beatles are okay but their importance is so over-weighed. "They're Only In It For the Money".
